herb Posted May 24, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 24, 2004 The entrance to the NY Passenger Ship Terminal is on 12th Avenue and 55th Street. There's no other entrance. Traffic on 12th Ave will depend on how many ships are in port that day. herb T.S. Bremen '67 M.S. Europa '67 Carnival Mardi Gras '80 NCL S.S. lritch426 Posted May 24, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 24, 2004 When we got there last week there was no traffic at all. Got to the pier at 10:30 and was on the ship by 11:00 BUT when we disembarked on sunday it was a zoo. This was at about 11:30. But we were delayed getting off the ship (about 1 hour). I would get there for 11am if you're like me and want to get on the ship as early as possibe, and avoid the long embarking lines. we took the taxi to the drop off area of the pier I'm sure this is what you would do too. The earlier you get there the less of a line. It was cake. You might want to have the taxi pick you up across the street after disembarking... that was a real mess, if we would have waited for the taxi to enter the terminal we would have waited forever! Good luck and enjoy! 24cruzn Posted May 24, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 24, 2004 NYC traffic is usually light on Sunday mornings, especially holiday weekends, but Fleet Week is 5/26-6/1, so traffic next Sunday will probably be much heavier than usual because of the public tours of the naval vessels. Allow extra time. Also, the cab drivers know where to drop off, so don't worry about street names or numbers. We usually use a car service when taking a NYC cruise, but we've decided to take a train to GCT and a taxi to the pier to avoid traffic delays. Plus it's far less expensive. FierceAXboi, you might want to post on the 5/30 Dawn Rollcall Board, if you haven't already done so. It's a good way to "meet" your fellow cruisers. See you next week (can't wait for 5 p.m. Friday - vacation officially starts then).
Docswiffy Posted May 24, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 24, 2004 Just remember all its fleet week! Friends said it will be crazy in that area. I was not planning on leaving early since only takes 1/2 hour for me to get into the city on a Sunday but a cabbie told me fleet week is another story in the area where the piers are.... Rare uneamie Posted May 24, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 24, 2004 I think the number of ships in port plays a huge roll in the traffic (not even counting what may be going on in the the city that day). Last October there were 4 ships in port on our sail away day. The traffic was a nighmare. It took us 2 1/2 hours to get from our 42nd st. motel to the pier. We left our motel at 10:30AM and got in line at 1:00PM. The line was very long so therefore we never got on the ship till 2:30PM. We will never go that route again. We plan on parking at and taking the Weehawkin ferry and walking a few blocks to the pier. I would rather walk a few block with our luggage then sit in that traffic ever again. However on our next cruise, Dawn will be the only ship in port so it probably will not be as bad.
 Countdown - Dawn 11 day cruise ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Home Lines - 5/1988 Disney Wonder - 10/1998 Carnival Triumph - 7/2002 Carnival Legend - 10/2003 NCL - Dawn - 1/2005

smeyer418 Posted May 26, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 26, 2004 Remember it should be a little easier this year as some of the ships have moved to Bayonne instead of the NY Passenger ship terminal. If you have little luggage you can always get off on the east side of 12 th ave and walk accross the street and take the elevator up. The traffic does get pretty mixed up on the passenger terminal. You can check how many ships are scheduled at www,nypst.com but remember that some of the RC ships will be in Bayonne no matter what the schedule says. emcemt Posted May 26, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 26, 2004 best tip for pick up (if you dont have a ton of luggage) is to be picked up ON 12th ave...across the street. Avoid the entire termianl all together.
