Tipping - £ or $

I will be cruising for the first time in the Caribbean on Ventura (freedom dining). I will be using US dollars day to day in ports of call. Is it acceptable to tip room service waiters and our steward in US dollars or do I need to take sufficient sterling to cover this?

Different people will tell you different things. All I can say is that when asking on two different occasions, we were poliely asked to give sterling, since that meant it was easier for them to pay-in - and they wouldn't lose on the exchange.

Since then, we always tip in sterling when travelling P&O.
