What do butlers do?

Let me start by saying that I am a long tme Holland America cruiser, thinking of trying Celebrity because I've heard so many good things about them, particularly the food. (Also don't like HAL's 2006 Europe Itineraries.)

 

While reading several postings to learn more about X, I saw several people say that no request was too much for their butler. Since we usually book suites unless they are sold out, I've wondered what do the butlers do? How many cabins does one butler typically handle, etc. What typical or non typical request have you given a butler?
