Getting Around In Oslo

Recommended Posts

We will be in Oslo on Thursday, 7/19/12, fron 0700 to 1600. We would like to visit the Vigeland Gardens (went there in '86 and loved it) and then stop at GlasMagasinet (hopefully to get some more Konge Tinn flatware).

What is the best way to travel (HOHO, tram, walking, etc)? Not sure we can walk very long distances as we will both be using canes but we can walk a fair ways.

Where do we get tickets and will be need local currency?

How do we figure out which tram/whatever to take to each place and then get back to the ship? I have read that tram #12 will get us to the Park.

Thanks for any help,

Dru

If you want to do the HOHO bus for the sightseeing aspect, the closest stops to GlasMagasinet would be:

#4 CLARION ROYAL CHRISTIANIA HOTEL, Outside the hotel entrance.

(Continue up the street around the cathedral; about 300 meters)

or

#5 GRAND HOTEL & KARL JOHAN STREET, Outside Grand Hotel entrance.

(Walk back down Karl Johans gate and turn left on Kongens gate; about 450 meters)

Otherwise, yes you can take the Tram #12 to Vigelands Park. The Rådhusplasen stop is right in front of the Rådhus (City Hall), which will be right in front of your ship, since you're docking at Akershus pier. The walk is about 500 meters. You would want the tram headed towards Majorstuen, and the stop is Vigelandsparken (there are recorded stop announcements and a digital display on board showing the next stop name).

You can buy tickets from the tram driver for 46 NOK if you have local currency. Otherwise, you can purchase advance tickets (30 NOK) and 24-hr passes (75 NOK) at most 7-Eleven, Deli De Luca, Mix and Narvesen stores in addition to other kiosks and grocery shops near stops. I don't know if the tourist information office at the cruise pier sells transit tickets in addition to the Oslo Pass (which also covers museum admission). There is a 7-11 directly behind the city hall (about 200 m from the stop). Tickets are valid for 1 hour from when they're activated and include unlimited transfers.

To get from Vigelands Park to GlasMagasinet, catch the Bus #20 from in front of the park heading towards Galgeberg. Get down two stops later at Majorstuen, and switch to the T-bane (subway). The station is diagonally across the street from the bus stop and marked with a T in a circle.

Take any train eastbound towards the city center, and get down at Stortinget. Follow the signs for the Grensen exit, and GlasMagasinet is a block down Grensen at Stortorvet plaza near the cathedral.

To get back to the ship from GlasMagasinet, there is another Tram 12 stop about 250 meters from the store: Take a left on Møllergata, which runs along one side of GlasMagasinet, and walk along the Stortorvet plaza (When you cross the central pedestrian street Karl Johans gate, Møllergata changes names to Kongens gate). Continue to Prinsens gate, and turn left. There will be a stop for the Tram 12, and taking it towards Majorstuen will bring you back to Rådhusplassen.

Alternatively it's a little over 15 minutes' walk through downtown: Cross the Stortorvet plaza and continue a block to Karl Johans gate. Turn right, and walk up the street to Akersgata. Turn left, and follow Akersgata until it ends, and then turn right. You will find yourself back at Rådhusplassen.

GlasMagasinet should take international credit cards, but for snacks or other small purchases, you might want some local currency. Almost every place takes cards, but most use chip & PIN style cards.

Great info. We have a PIN style card so should be good for that.

Just read that the 24-hour pass is good for both the tram and the T-bane and that the senior pass is based on an age of 67.

Is that good data?

The walk from the store to the ship sounds doable unless we spend too much time walking and taking pictures at Vigelands.

Yes, all tickets and passes are good on T-bane, trams, buses, and ferries. The discounted prices for seniors are 25 NOK for a ticket purchased on board, 15 for a single ticket purchased in advance, and 38 NOK for a 24-hour pass.
