Galveston - drop luggage off or carry it yourself?

My sister and I are cruising out of Galveston on the Triumph on July 30 and this is the first cruise for both of us.

For those of you that cruise out of Galveston, do you drive up and drop off your luggage with the porters or keep it with you?

We won't have a ton of bags and we can haul it on our own, but it seems like somewhere in the boards I had read where people were saying that the porters do not work for Carnival so when you hand over your bags you are taking a chance... but I don't know if that's correct.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Drop off that luggage!!! It's customary to tip the porters $1 per bag...they'll get your bags on the ship! Have fun on your first cruise!!! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

If you use one of the parking lots like EZCruise (not sure of Lighthouse or the others), you keep your luggage with you on the shuttle & save the wait in the long line to drop off luggage, then give to the porters at the pier as you get off the shuttle.

I think they are talking about hauling it onboard themselves!

On all 9 of the cruises that we have gone out of Galveston we have used porters getting on and off the ship. We have never had a problem. Not to say others have not, but it has been a good experience every time so far. Have a great time!

Ditto this!!! That would be a real pain in the rear to haul your bags on yourself. I don't haul mine off either! Too much stuff to carry down a bunch of stairs plus I'm not in that big of a hurry to leave the ship! ;)

We have used the porters as well. Never a problem. It will make the beginning of your cruise much more pleasurable. Don't forget to tip!

Places like EZ Cruise make things easy. You park your car and they load your stuff onto a bus or van and transport you to the terminal. The porters will take your big bags; eventually they will magically appear in your cabin, usually after the ship sails! Keep a small bag with you with meds, valuables and such. Once the rooms are open you can dump that as well. Tips for the porters - usually $1-2, depending on how heavy the bag is.

We also paid the EZ Cruise ppl to take our bags out of the car and when we returned to put them in the car for us. We tipped them extra for helping us out!

Are you driving?

In my opinion, the line of personal cars trying to get into and then stop to drop/pickup luggage is a hassle. Skip all that and park offsite (Lighthouse is our preference).

You park and they will help load all your luggage onto the bus. Tip em a few bucks.

Then yes, when you arrive at terminal, grab a porter and they will roll your stuff on down the long terminal and on into the ship bins. Tip em a few bucks.

Keep valuables, medicine, and maybe a bathing suit in your carry on. Easy.

Same on return, grab a porter inside and they will assist you all the way thru customs and back to the pickup point for your parking shuttle.

It is true that porters and many of the terminal staff do not work for CCL. But do not let this sway you from their service.
