July 19th Lands of Time Cruise

Hi everyone,

 

Question for those of you who are on this sailing: what are you doing for Alexandria? We are booked on the pyramids tour for Cairo (Port Said), but are unsure of what to for Alexandria. Oceania's Alexandria excursions do not sound to appealing. There does not seem that there is much worth seeing in Alexandria, considering we are seeing the pyramids the next day. Given the current political situation, would you feel comfortable doing Alexandria on your own? I kind of want to walk around Corniche, but my family is a bit nervous of going out on our own. We are thinking about just staying on the boat but also still might consider an excursion or going out on our own.

 

Any thoughts on what you are doing would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will be spending most of your time on the bus if you take a single day tour from Port Said to the Pyramids.

 

The more worthwhile Pyramid Tours pick you up at Port Said on day 1, overnight at or near the Nile, and then return you to Alexandria on Day 2.

Most of them end with a tour of Alexandria, so that you are at or near the ship in plenty of time.

The itinerary were on first stops in Alexandria than goes on to Cario (Port Said) and then moves on to Israel, so that would not be possible.

The itinerary should give you some ideas of what there is to see. Our tour is full but you might want to contact the tour operator to see what's available. They do the tours both ways. Alexandria/Port Said -or- Port Said/Alexandria.

You'll find that a great proportion of your fellow passengers, and virtually all first time visitors, are overnighting off the ship in Egypt. :)

You just don't get enough time at the Pyramids on a one day tour.

We're on this cruise and will overnight with 2 other couples. However, almost no one is doing this. Lots of apprehension about Cairo. Some are choosing not to leave the ship. Others feeling safer with O ex. 6 hours driving, and Ramadan causing major sites to close each day at 3:00 PM. leaves little time in Cairo and long time in a car:( Even with our overnight, time will have to be adjusted due to religious holiday hours.

We are doing Oceania's excursion exclusively of the pyramids (PYRAMIDS, MEMPHIS AND SAKKARA) and avoiding Cairo. Will Ramadan have an effect on us seeing the pyramids? Oceania does not mention that in the excursion guide.

No idea. You can call O. I would think that they know, and arrange the day accordingly. Our guide informed us of major sites closing at 3:00 PM and she is making some changes for us to go to the bazaar, Ben Ezra Synogogue, after 3:00 as they will be open, We're going to pyramids as soon as we leave hotel next morning. Our hotel is on the Nile and overlooks the pyramids so we'll get to see them at night also.
