Booking Hotel/Shuttle through Carnival

I am new to cruising with Carnival and wanted to get some advice from you veteran cruisers. 4 of us (2 couples) are booked to sail on the Carnival Pride out of Long Beach California on November 27th, 2005. We arrive at LAX late on the 26th of November. We need a hotel room for our pre and post cruise. My question is should I book hotel and shuttle through Carnival or just do it myself through Orbitz or Hotel.com. Is there any price advantage to going through Carnival? Are there specific hotels in Long Beach that I should be looking at or avoiding? We would like to be near the terminal at Long Beach if possible, but I would like to hear other cruisers opinions. Thanks.
