LEGEND Review - May 13th thru 21st

Question about Brett Alans, the CD... Seems like just about everyone on this board thinks he's pretty awful. What is it about him, exactly, that you don't like? Is he mean? Stupid?

He's none of those things.

He's one of those guys trying to be funny, when he's painfully not. Sort of like watching Conan O'Brien when he first started.

IMHO, he's just L A M E.

They even broadcast a Regis/Kathy Lee type of show every morning. Staring him and his assistant. Simply unwatchable....IMHO

Ever watch a bad sitcom, where you want to change the channel. You can't here. I just avoid anything he hosts. Did the same with Mark Hawkins. I found him unfunny as well. And I had a great cruise without him.

Mr. Pete- I enjoyed reading your review on the Legend - we sailed her last summer and go again in a few weeks. Can you tell me who the band was in Satchmo's and what kind of music they played?? We loved the Music Zone band last year and I was hoping they'd be on still, although I highly doubt it!

Thanks! Lynn

Their name was Music Connection. They are NOT good. Especially having had the pleasure of the Music Society there previously. Also, the band that did the Ticket to Ride show on the Miracle last year excelled. These guys blew. Place was always empty when we passed there, in addition to always being out of tune. They mostly played easy listening.

Again, well worth it, and Godfrey was detailed as well. He has a real passionate love for his island.

He was the tour I was leaning towards due to all the reviews I have read on other boards.........your last sentence is my seller.

It says it all. That is what I want. ;)

Yes Pete. I did look at your pics and the room looks great. Gene appreciated being able to see the room and he told us all about it at the hospital. It sounds great!!!!

The piano player at Billie's wasn't too bad. But my favorite on the Legend is the singer/musician in the Casino bar......Tony Ray I think his name is. He is great!!

Just joined Cruise Critic, even though I've known about it for awhile. We are looking at our first non-Disney cruise and I noticed that you have cruised both. The only other cruise we had done until now was the Fantasy 9 years ago and we had a oceqan view room which seemed small to me as I compare it to the DCL rooms. I'm just curious about the balcony rooms. How do they compare in size to DCL (excluding the aft room you were in, which I understand is larger). Also, there seems to be more choices of balcony rooms, based on location, where DCL just has cat 5 and cat 6. Any comparisons/input would be appreciated.

Our Disney room was LARGER than any REGULAR Carnival ship room that we have been in, other than that cat 11 suite.

But having sailed the Fantasy, if you picture adding a "couch", and a table, the rooms are about the same size, just less floor space. Then add another 35 SqFt for the balcony.

Most of the Cat 8's (a, b, etc.) are really all the same size rooms, just on different decks. Then there are the extended balconies (c, I) which just have slightly bigger balconies. Then there are the secret cat 8 rooms around the port side of the rear elevator that have HUGE balconies. If you go with a cat 8 rear aft, go with deck 4. The rail is more upright, and gives you more usable space.

But again, the DCL rooms themselves are bigger.

Good luck!

We sailed the Legend before & are sailing her again in March (both times out of Fla) - I think you'll probably find a livelier crowd on Carnival than on RC.

Many people who "frown" on Carnival have never been on Carnival & therefore are basically snobs if they are very negative about a cruise line they've never been on. If they've been on Carnival & don't like it, fine - say specifically what you didn't like & then find a cruise line more to your taste. To me, people should just cruise what they like - period. You found RC "boring" - so you are trying another cruise line. Don't be "scared" - I think you'll have a fine time!

Let us know how your cruise goes!

You'll be fine!

I just got off the Legend (Sept 18-26th). It was my first cruise (and a honeymoon cruise at that!!!), so I can't compare it to anything else... but I have to say that it certainly didn't suck. I would probably fit into the "boring" category of people... I only went to the disco (Medusa's Lair) once... and didn't stay long. But the Mrs. & I were up a 3 am to get a slice of pizza one morning, and there were plenty of party people still up and about. It was the first formal night... and that might be a clue as to when to go out partying... there are probably partying cycles & the trick would be to party when everyone else is partying.

As for Brett Alans... yeah, the man is a bit "hokey" but I found him to be informative & 100% bareable. I didn't catch his magic act (the Mrs. was seasick... we'll definately get "the patch" for next time) but I saw all of his talks. I didn't really expect a CD to be on par with Leno or Letterman, so I wasn't disappointed.

One of the tricks I caught onto is that the Legend's gift shops price-match with all of Carnival's "recommended" port merchants. So if you go the port's recommended jewelry shop and find a ring or a watch that you like, and if it also happens to be for sale in one of the Legend's giftshops... it will be the same price. You can also get most excursions for less money once you get into port... but Carnival lets the people who bought from them off the ship first. So if there is an excursion that you REALLY want, buy it from Carnival to avoid disappointment.

Good luck. You'll have fun.

We were on the Legend the week before you and I agree with your assessment of Brett Alans. He actually made me chuckle a number of times.
