patroet Posted October 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2012 We have booked a whale watching tour and I would really like to bring my DSLR. Is there a chance the camera will get wet? Should I leave the DSLR on the ship and bring my waterproof camera?

Should I leave the DSLR on the ship and bring my waterproof camera? My DH usually brings both on all types of excursions. You will be able to get great shots with the SLR before you leave and perhaps when stationary and then use the waterproof camera when the boat is in motion or if it starts to rain. Nole0202 Posted October 31, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 31, 2012 It will be difficult to get quality whale photos with a WP P&S camera. Should consider a 300-400mm lens on your DSLR, with a plastic "rain-suit" for it.

What Nole said. If you want anything bigger than a dot with a fin, you'll need a long lens. There are some P&S cameras with long lenses but you just won't be able to capture the image quickly enough, in my experience. I rented a 400mm lens for my Canon T2i for our Alaska trip. I took it on the boat along with a monopod. While difficult, I did capture a good amount of nice images with it.
Nole0202 Posted November 14, 2012 #5 Share Posted November 14, 2012 Agree, need a monopod with a long lens and try to shoot at 1/250 or faster. P&S cameras have too much shutter lag, you will just get the splash. Shoot using the drive function at 4 frames pr second.
