The beauty of visiting Puerto Rico is that there are so many wondeful places to visit outside of SJ that you'll wish you had more time to spend than just a few days. If you don't want to spend big bucks at a major resort, consider going southwest to La Paguera (Lajas) to stay on the bioluminescent bay. No real beaches right on the bay, but many within a few minutes drive. La Paguera has a couple of nice bayside "paradores" (designates government-recognition of a local inn that gives friendly service at fair prices) that are pretty reasonable. For gorgeous beaches and sunsets, Rincon, on the west side of the island can't be beat. There are many lodging options in Rincon - from resort to vacation rentals. Do a search on the PR websites, you'll find a lot of info on the different regions and lodging possibilities.

2 years ago we stayed at the Westin Rio Mar in Rio Grande and loved it so much we are going there again this year (3 day stay precruise). Many amenities, right on own private beach, casino, restaurants (multiple), golf course, tennis. Shuttle svs to and from airport or cruise ship pier, spa, fitness center - about 1 hr from San Juan airport. Check out their website at www.westinriomar.com Highly recommend it.

Sangoofy,
We are already booked at the ElConquistador post cruise, but we're thinking about doing the Westin precruise. We are on the Carnival Destiny 6/13 and are planning on arriving in PR on the 10th. Maybe we'll run into you. I happened to come across a website with villas at the WestinRio. This would really help us as we have a family of 6 and have to book 2 hotel rooms other wise. Do you remember seeing these when you were there. It says they are 50 feet from the hotel. We own a timeshare at the Westin in Puerto Vallarta and one side is the hotel, the other is condos, yet they look very much the same from the outside. Is this how the Westin is in PR?

jmurph: Not familiar with the ones in Puerto Vallarta but I did see the ones in Puerto Rico, nearer to golf course and still by beach. Looked very nice indeed. Resort for our stay was getting pretty booked up when I last checked so you may want to move on this up pretty quickly if you decide this is where you want to stay- we do love it there!!
