Gross generalization of course, but generally bumpier Northbound along the Pacific Coast than it is Southbound.

The Japanese Current flows South along the coast, so when coming North, you are "bucking the current".

We have recently returned from the 4/18 Mercury. Many were surprised that our first night out of San Francisco was so smooth. Our second night it all changed. Really rough, rougher than I remember experiencing on a Caribbean. Coming back north the seas weren't bad at all.

I was surprised, because I have heard the same thing about the seas being rougher Northbound. Therefore as Druke I said, it is a gross eneralization to say it's generally bumpier Northbound along the Pacific Coast than Southbound.
