Help: Passport safety & chinese tour agencies

Is it standard practice/ safe for a Chinese Tour agency (Tour Beijing.com) to request a copy of my passport in order to book bullet train tickets I WILL NEED FOR A 1 DAY TRIP FROM BEIJING - BEIDEIHE BEACH ? I am on the DIAMOND PRINCESS MAY 3 sailing & staying at the Marriott Beijing City Wall 3 days prior. I am trying to arrange a private tour to Beideihe ( my mother & grandmother lived there in the 1920's & 30's) & Tour Beijing has good reviews via Trip Adivisor & have been very thorough & diligent with the plan.
