My friends will be renting a car & driving us from Gatwick to Southampton.

 

What's a good (cheap) car rental company for one day?

We just did this on June 3, 2005.

 

The car rental agencies available out of Gatwick to Southampton are Hertz, Avis, National/ Alamo (assuming that you drop off at the airport in Southampton).

 

We paid 46 pounds total for the mid sized station wagon (manual shift) including taxes and drop off surcharge. We used 13 pounds (GBP, not weight) of diesel fuel. We booked through the National Car Rental web site. The baggage space was more than adequate for our baggage for the four of us.
