Thrawny Posted June 14, 2005 #26 Share Posted June 14, 2005 Im sorry but it is a disgrace how someone under 21 and over 18 is burdened with huge responsibilies like voting, possible draft into the armed forces, driving a moter vehicle, operating heavy machinery, smoking cigarettes, looking at pornography, signing legally binding documents, borrow money by using credit, get married, liable as an adult for you actions with the possibility of facing capital punishment and federal prison. but we arent old enough to handle an alcoholic drink? The drinking age is 21 because of idealistic activists, not because of any other logical reason.

The drinking age is 21 because of idealistic activists, not because of any other logical reason. When the age was raised to 21, the number of teens involved in deadly car accidents plummeted; thus, the higher age limit is protecting our young people. I consider that a logical reason. I consider that a logical reason. They fell, but there are still lots of teenagers and adults dying daily in alcohol related accidents. Raise the penalities severly and you will see the number of drunk drivers of all ages drop. Punish the violaters, not those of my age group who are responsible

However, there's no use to argue with someone who's still young enough to know it all. If you read the facts unemotionally, they clearly show that drinking isn't good for any of us -- regardless of whether we're driving -- and it is exponentially worse for younger people. On the other hand, I do agree that drunk drivers of all ages should be more severely punished. However, as long as jails and prisons are overcrowded, I don't think that's going to happen. I also don't think that more severe punishments would deter the amount of drinking and driving on our highways; drinking impairs judgement, and no drunk thinks he's the one who'll be in an accident -- that's always the other guy. So while I agree in theory, I don't see how it could be workable.

Here we go with somemore "young people" bashing. This crap gets OLD.
OPSoccermom Posted June 15, 2005 #33 Share Posted June 15, 2005 Actually, on RCCL ships, 18yos require parental permission to dring beer or wine, and are NOT allowed to drink any other liquor. RCCL ships... RCCL rules... whether they are "legally" adults or not. As for resposible for their own actions, perhaps they ahould be, but as I read the Rules&Regs of RCCL ships, it is the 18yos parent or legal guardian who is responsible for them... like it or not. A~ Was on the Mariner over spring break with a large family group. We had several teenagers ages 15 to 20 with us. The 18 and 20 year olds had no problem buying whatever alcohol they wanted on board despite not having parental consent and only having one hole punched in the sea pass. The bigger concerns, though, are off the ship. Be careful, esp. in Jamaica and Cozumel. They basically do not enforce a drinking age. We heard several stories of kids sneaking off the ship to go to bars. Saw teenagers being carried back to the Mariner by their parents. Considering what just happened in Aruba, any parent would really have to think hard about allowing teenage girls to go anywhere by themselves (esp. somewhere like Carlos and Charlies) in Cozumel or Jamaica unless they went with them. This is not a comment about the drinking age as much as it is about safety.
