Great review so far! I hate when there is even a day of bad weather on vacation, and you guys had more than your share for sure! Glad you were able to make the most of it though.

Ps: our next cruise is in AQ, and your pictures of Blu are getting me very excited! :)

That is so awesome!! You will love it so much! Yes, the bad weather was a bummer but we did feel good about how much we saved in cancelled excursions... More for our next cruise! ;)

Grand Cayman, Continued...

As I noted before, most people’s excursions were cancelled because of the bad weather in Grand Cayman, and while Celebrity did offer to foot the bill for the shuttle service to Georgetown, standing in the rain in the hour-long line wasn’t necessarily our idea of a vacation. So us and three other groups of two opted for riding on a tour of Grand Cayman with Valerita for $25, as we thought it would be a unique way to explore the island. We were really glad that we did so!

The ship was offering the exact same tour for $50, so for $25 we were getting a really good deal and did not have to ride in a big bus like other people did on their ship’s tours. Plus, the island is so small that we figured it would be easy to get back to the cruise if the van did break down. Valerita began our tour by driving us to the historic Homestead House, which I guess is one of the oldest homes on the island and people can just buy it-- it’s not government owned property. So she said a family lives there right now, but I feel kind of bad for them because this house is also a stop on pretty much every island tour’s itinerary.

8614233740_af330b6f0f_z.jpg

After that, she drove us through different residential neighborhoods so that we could get a feel for how and where the locals live. We have been to many islands before and often feel a bit guilty seeing shacks and shantytowns while on our cruise tours, but the Cayminians live in very nice, modest, colorful homes. She even drove us through her neighborhood which was very cute! It was weird thinking about us being on a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean sea, because the neighborhoods were quite developed like little suburbs.

After that, Valerita dropped us off at the turtle farm and dolphin habitat, where they also have a rum shop with free samples of rum and rum cake, and she basically let us explore at our leisure for an hour or so. These stops were right on the beach, so we were able to get out and take pictures, walk around, etc. As you can see though, the weather was still pretty bad so we couldn’t get in the water.

8613125509_a6dfc2a329_z.jpg

With this tour, it was $10 to get into the turtle habitat, and our friends said that it was a lot of fun holding the turtles and that their only complaint was that we had more time. It was cool to get to see the different people swimming with the dolphins and getting shot up in the air by them! We felt bad though because it really was quite cold outside and windy/rainy to be in the water swimming with dolphins. These people were good troopers!

8614233240_870a8e0f2b_z.jpg

We sampled some rum and rum cake after that and then got back in the van to drive to the town of Hell. It’s a complete tourist trap, but really, no visit to GC is complete without a stop through because it’s so unique. Funny enough, we had been carrying around a post card to send to our friends for a couple of days but we never came across a post office until we reached “Hell!” So, their postcard was sent from Hell. They have three tiny stores selling you a plethroa of t-shirts advertising your visit to Hell, which of course the tourists lapped up. Apparently the town actually got its name by an explorer who stumbled upon the area filled with these grotesque rocks and noted that he felt like he was in Hell. It stuck.

Valerita was such a sweet lady that we decided to hire her to drive us back to the ship after we spent a little time walking around Georgetown. It really was that “lemons to lemonade” cliche because while we were bummed that we couldn’t visit Stingray City and that it was cold outside, we got to laugh at Valerita’s jokes and see Grand Cayman through her little van instead. I was really, really glad we went with her-- GREAT memories!

After we got back to the ship, the weather got worse so we just stayed indoors. This night I discovered my favorite drink-- the Lucky Cat! We ended up staying at the Molecular Bar for three hours after dinner and it was so much fun. We met another couple who was on their honeymoon, and they taught me how to play Blackjack. My husband and I went down to the casino after our night of drinks (which could be dangerous!!) and I played a couple of rounds of Blackjack. I couldn’t believe my luck! I won $40 (4 games in a row) just by staying at 15 or 16 (I got 19 and 21 also) and watching the dealer bust and other people hitting at 17. It was great. I have officially graduated from the slot machines!!

I can’t begin to tell you how much fun it was to just be on this beautiful ship, despite the bad weather. We truly felt that the port stops were just bonuses to our vacation, because this ship was the most beautiful, classy ship we had ever been on. We delighted in spending our afternoons in the Persian Gardens, eating a long, leisurely dinner at Blu (me, always getting sparkling water and our Sommalier bringing my glass of Chianti out before I even asked...) and then heading off to the Molecular bar to chat with Loida and meet new people before we tried our luck in the casino.

I think that sometimes, yes, you want to have a warm, sunny vacation, but for me the vacation was truly just getting to connect with my husband, walk everywhere, eat when we felt like it, read books in quiet places, relax, make new friends and laugh a lot throughout the day. I can honestly say that, while I would have loved the sunshine, I wouldn’t have changed a thing because now we have extra money for our next cruise from our excursions getting cancelled!!

Awesome! I think it is definitely all about the attitude. ;) But if I had a nickel for every time I heard someone complain about the weather, I could definitely have sprung for a massage... :)

That's great to hear! It makes a huge difference I think when you consider what you allow your "vacation" to be like. :) I was definitely disappointed at times, but then again, coming back with more money than we started with was a nice plus!

(and then of course the hot day at sea on our last day made up for it!!)

Hi Joanne!

Unfortunately she did not work for a specific company or provide us with a business card. She was an independent operator that worked with the ports, so if you arrive in Georgetown or Spotts Bay, look for the ladies holding up signs advertising island tours, then ask them if Valerita is working. ;)

Thank you! I remembered your review of the Reflection (we will be sailing her in July) and tried the Black Mamba at Molecular Bar per your suggestion. :) The price of AQ is so much more than Verandah right now for our upcoming cruises that it doesn't make sense for us to have it this time around, but I am definitely spoiled!

Thanks for all the kind comments! I have been slammed at work trying to get caught up from our two week vacation, hence the reason why my posts aren't coming all at once. But I will be posting tomorrow about our {very disappointing} day in Jamaica, so stay tuned! ;)

(Also, giving tips on how to convince your husband that yes, we absolutely need to stop by the Future Bookings Desk to book another cruise [!!], even when he is sober ;))

This is a little side trail about some of the pros and cons of the beverage package.

Now, I really and truly do not drink much at home besides a glass of wine a night or maybe two on the weekend if I'm really living large. I am from wine country in Oregon where we have some of the best pinots in the world, yet I am not 100% loyal to pinots. My true passion is with Italian wines-- all kinds. So I know that at dinner, a glass of Merlot is just not going to cut it. A cab could come close, but I truly do crave my Italian wine with dinner.

Because we had the 1,2,3,Go package, we were both able to get the Classic Alcohol Beverage package which permits coffees up to $5, bottled waters, sodas, beers up to $5, and any alcoholic beverages up to $8. This was perfectly fine for my husband, as he really just prefers Coke and the occasional beer when laying by the pool, but for me I just wasn't sure it was going to cut it on my vacation. Now, don't get me wrong, if the upgrade to Premium was ridiculously expensive, I would have been content drinking Cabs or Chardonnays with dinner because spending a lot of money on wine isn't a necessity for me. I just have a love affair with Italian wines. Unfortunately for me though, Pinots & Chiantis/Sangioveses were between $9 - $12. Not covered under the CAP.

Because we had that package, it was only $11.50 per day to upgrade which I thought was a great deal. I did the math to see whether a beverage package would make sense for us on future cruises where it was NOT included in our booking, and for the Classic Alcohol package alone, it is $484 per person for an 11 night cruise. This comes out to $44 per day without tip. Bottle waters I believe are $4, Corona is $5, and a class of Shiraz, Merlot or Cab I believe is either $7 or $8. Coffee at Cafe al Bacio is $4.50, so even if I drank one glass of those beverages that are covered under the CAP, I would still only be up to $27.50 (One coffee, one bottled water, one beer, two glasses of wine). That drinking amount is pretty standard for me on vacation, so I truly don't think it would be in my best interest to buy a beverage package once we don't have them free on future cruises.

What I would do instead, is pay per drink. If I were going to spend $44 per day anyway to get the CAP, I would much rather spend $44 per day on getting a drink at the Molecular Bar, because the PREMIUM alcohol package for an 11-day cruise is $594, or $54 per day on an 11-night cruise. I might come a little bit closer to hitting $54 by having a class of Chianti instead of Cab, and by having a drink at the MB, but still, I can tell you that I truly only indulged in those loves (Chianti & MB drinks) because I had the free beverage package and then upgraded to the PAP once on board for an extra $10 per day.

Your drink styles may be different, but I think that you will need to determine what you truly will drink on board, and whether the package at essentially either $44 or $54 per day is worth it. I know that my 5 pages of drinks with $0 signs next to them was fabulous, but I also drank WAY more than I normally would have, just because I could. :) In my normal life, I don't drink a beer or two in the afternoon, two glasses of wine at dinner, and two martinis either before or after-- that's for sure!

Anyway, here are a couple of drink pictures!

The Lucky Cat: My FAV Molecular Bar drink!!

8614231482_e5d5d92a11_z.jpg

A lot of left over drinks (not all mine!!) at the MB from happy customers. :)

Day 7 - Falmouth, Jamaica

We woke up this morning already docked in Falmouth and with a great view of the “town square” (if you could call it that) from our table in Blu. It is incredibly Disney-esque, and doesn’t entirely feel like a local Jamaican town-- especially since there are dilapidated shacks across the street. But still, I get that the government is trying and a lot of money has been poured into this port. It’s cute to look at-- just not very authentic.

One side note is that in sailing this route, we found that our room on the Starboard side of the ship provided us the best views of all ports. We looked over the ocean in Fort Lauderdale instead of the city, we looked over at the main waterfront area of Cozumel, tendering I guess didn’t really count in Grand Cayman because we all had essentially the same view, in Falmouth we overlooked the water and the hills instead of the main square, and then in Labadee we had a view of the cove area instead of the ocean. It was a great side to be on and we really loved waking up to those views in the morning (albeit cloudy views).

Unfortunately it was raining really hard this day. Again. Our Cozumel beach day excursion was cancelled in Cozumel, as was a beach day we were planning to have in Grand Cayman. The front desk of Celebrity kept noting that for this day in particular in Jamaica, the weather was going to be 80 degrees and partly sunny. We thought they knew something that we didn’t know, and our beach excursion was not cancelled either, so we decided to go for it. On this trip in particular, we only booked beach days because we really just wanted to relax and lay in the sun. Our year has been stressful, and we were just looking for a sunny beach break rather than touring and excursioning, so these were our initial plans when booking this vacation. For Jamaica, we opted to go with a ship-sponsored tour instead of our own because we heard that Falmouth can be somewhat of a sketchy area. Let’s just say it wasn’t our favorite port town.

So we decided to book the “Chukka Beach Break with Lunch,” which was $49.95 per person. It was a five hour trip, and what we envisioned was being dropped to a private beach area outside of the city, eating a full buffet lunch of authentic Jamaican food, laying out on the white sand and under palm trees, and swimming in the warm ocean in a relaxing setting. We have done a similar beach tour in Mexico called Las Caletas, so it was our only frame of reference to compare a beach getaway to. The ship did not provide much information regarding this beach trip, only to say that it was a “relaxing beach excursion with an authentic Jamaican lunch provided.” There are many things that they failed to say with that generic description -- which I will get to later.

Our beach trip start time was 11:00am, and we were supposed to leave around 3:00pm. A group from the ship had gone earlier at 8:00am, and they were only supposed to be gone for four hours-- their tour did not include lunch which is why we opted to go for the later time. I imagined that while they would be at the beach before us, their tour guide would require them to head back to the ship at 12, once their tour was over. This was not the case. (But again, more on that later.)

When we got off the ship and headed out to where the tour buses were gathering, just outside of the Falmouth city square, it was really starting to rain heavily. We were really surprised that the ship was not cancelling the tour, as it seemed really ridiculous to go lay out on the beach in rainy, stormy weather. But alas, they did not. Even when we called down in the morning, they said it was still going on. So we trusted them. No one who was waiting for the tour at this point looked very excited, and we all looked a bit skeptical. The group organizing this tour was a Jamaican tour company and it was very unorganized. We did not end up leaving Falmouth until 11:30am, for reasons I don’t know. We just stood around under the covered area, wondering what was going on and when we were going to head to the beach. Finally at 11:30 they loaded us onto the bus. We were supposed to stop in Falmouth at the courtyard where Jamaica first experienced running water, and then get a personal history tour of Falmouth as well. We did not do either of these things. Our driver just pointed out a couple of spots, such as the general vicinity in the hills where Usain Bolt is from, but did not give us a tour or stop at the water spot. We drove for about ten minutes until we reached the hideaway location where the Chukka Beach Break was set up (mind you, it was still raining). He notified us that his service was simply a shuttle, and that we could go back whenever we wanted-- we did not have to wait until 3:00pm. He said that shuttles came by every hour.

See what this actually meant was that the people who were there at 8:00am had no accountability on when they actually had to leave. So for less money (their excursion only cost $29.95), they were able to stay as long as they wanted-- from 8am - 3pm-- and because of this, many of the chairs and best spots along the beach were already taken. This was extremely frustrating because not only were we paying $20 more, but we were also getting less time. This would not necessarily be a factor for us later on because of what happened next, but the idea behind the whole thing just doesn’t make sense. Plus, our “lunch” was $20 which was RIDICULOUS. More on that later as well. Stay tuned...

Jamaica, continued...

I’ll admit that the beach area wasn’t terrible when we pulled up, but it really was a shame that they were sending people on the excursion when it was raining. When we got onto the beach area, they were selling umbrellas for $7 to protect you from the rain, but otherwise you were stuck if you didn’t want to shell out the money for that. After we had chosen our spot near some palm trees, the rain finally subsided a bit and we were able to stay dry temporarily. The saving grace of all of it was that it was relatively warm out, so we were not shivering. It was just annoying to have all of our belongings getting wet from the rain.

8614231056_09c89afdc9_z.jpg

8614231082_0ae0ed6861_z.jpg

After about fifteen minutes or so from our arrival at the Chukka Beach Break excursion, my husband decided to go for a swim and I laid out on the chair to get dry. No more than two minutes later, some locals came up and interrupted all of us by trying to sell their wares to us-- trinkets, shirts, hair braiding, etc. I was confused why they were on this beach, until I later found out that all of Jamaica is a public beach. The problem that I have with this is why on Earth did I pay $50 per person to drive to a public beach ten minutes away when I could have just taken a cab?!? Worse yet, there were four or five stray dogs-- some of which were pregnant-- who just laid at your chaise lounge and were whimpering for food. For a dog lover, it was heartbreaking. I was absolutely NOT relaxing, as the ship’s excursion guide might have promised me that I would be doing.

8614230880_b7fe7148ca_z.jpg

About thirty minutes after we arrived at the beach, they rang the bell for lunch and we lined up for our “buffet.” There was no buffet. It was a styrofoam plate with two tiny chicken wings, some cole slaw, a fried plantain, and some beans & rice. All for $20 per person!! This was the price difference between the “Chukka Beach Break” and the “Chukka Beach Break with lunch” that the ship was offering. It was an absolute joke. I tend to think of myself as a pretty easygoing person, but for $100 on this little excursion, I was absolutely livid. The people selling their goods would interrupt us and come up to us at our chaises every five minutes or so, and some would not really take no for an answer. They would banter until you said no firmly and then put your book up to your face or whatever. It was really annoying. I get that it’s a public beach and again, had I known that, I simply would NEVER had paid that kind of money to do this. Nowhere on Celebrity’s advertising materials did it state that it was a public beach, that stray dogs and people selling trinkets would be there, and that our “buffet” lunch would be a tiny plate of overcooked Jamaican food. And wouldn’t you know it? It started raining again.

8613122747_5e5bf9506c_z.jpg

An hour into this trip my husband and I were livid and decided to go back to the ship and try and get our money back. It wasn’t so much that it was raining during this excursion that they sent us on, but that everything else was totally inappropriate for a ship excursion of that cost. We had to wait about twenty more minutes in the rain for the next shuttle bus to arrive (along with other unhappy Celebrity and Royal Caribbean guests who were on the same excursion) and then a shuttle finally arrived and drove us back to the ship (while picking up a guy on the side of the road and giving him a ride into town as well...). It was pretty ridiculous and really the only low point of this whole vacation.

8613122583_2e40ecf567_z.jpg

Moral of the story: Either avoid this place altogether, or go on the morning Chukka Beach Break without lunch excursion and just stay until 3:00 so you get the most for your money. Or better yet, take a cab to the beach for half the price. Absolutely nothing was included in this excursion except the food plate, the lounge chair and the ten minute ride from town. NOT worth $100. Drinks were $5 and umbrellas were $7. Total rip-off.

Wow, what a total bummer. Im more than a bit leery about Jamaica (first time there in January). Hopefully i can find a suitable excursion (tend to avoid ship tours). I sure hope you complained and received a credit if some kind.

On a more positive note, I really love your photos - were so e of them taken with Instagram? I especially like the photos in Blu!

Look forward to reading more when you have time.

I tend to avoid ship tours, also, but really I would go with the ship on this one. I just did not have a good feeling about Falmouth and the people were not very friendly. We did go back and complain (which I will write more about tomorrow), and we did receive half of our money back. Not great, but I'll take it.

And yes, I did use Instagram for all of my pics this trip. :) I don't have a point and shoot and only a professional-grade DSLR, so I decided to leave the DSLR at home this trip and just sail with the iPhone/Instagram. I think it did a pretty good job! :)

Can I just check something? Did they allow you to carry out an upgrade to PAP purely for you, or did they make you upgrade your DH's package too?

Many thanks!

Hi! Yes-- they let me purely carry out an upgrade for myself only. My DH did NOT have to upgrade his. I know there have been some mixed messages on the board, but if you wait to upgrade until you get on the ship and not through the website, you will have no problems just doing one upgrade. You will upgrade at any bar area and on any day of the cruise-- the upgrade fee is pro-rated based on which day you sign up. :)
