Tulum Ruins excursion from Cozamel

Hi folks...

my family and I were thinking about taking this excursion when we dock in Cozamel but I've read some nasty reviews on it.

If you've been on this recently, could I get you to give an honest opinion of it and if you go again?

If you wouldn't do it, what would you do in Cozamel?

My daughter and I took Royal's tulum express trip in February. We very much enjoyed it. The ferry across to the mainland was choppy but we aren't prone to sea sickness. The wait to get on the bus was a little long but we did get to stand in the shade. Our guide was a Mayan descendent and very knowledgeable and easy to understand. The walk to the ruins from the parking lot was hot and dusty, but they do have a trolley to take you fora couple bucks. The ruins are well worth the money and time. There are a couple of shopping stops with decent restrooms. You can take snacks, they did give us a box lunch and bottled water. I would do it again.

Hope this helps.

Later...

Vicki

We did it last September and although the heat was brutal, we really enjoyed it. It does involve a fair bit of walking, so make sure you have good shoes, a hat, water and lots of sunscreen. There is a trolley which you can ride for $1.00 either way. We booked through the ship and our guide, a lady of Mayan decendancy, was excellent and really knew the history of the Mayans, their customs, etc. Most of all I loved all the iguanas that were hanging around all over. I guess it pays to be a bit nerdy and enjoy Mayan history. There's a long, quite steep stairway down to the shore and you should have time to take a short swim if you wish. But remember that you'll then have to climb back up. There was an open-air market at the entrance and the vendors were very friendly and not pushy. I'd recommend it.

We did it last year -- my review of it starts at post 64 on this (probably too wordy) thread:

I had been to Tulum years before and it is beautiful. I just can't recommend it as an excursion, though. I am sure others would, but if it was me I would stay around Cozumel.

Good luck! Ain't it fun thinking about it, though??

Tulum still stands as one of my favorite excursions. We had a wonderful tour guide, the history is really interesting and the view from there is unbelievable. It's been almost 10 years since we did that excursion but it is by far our favorite excursion in Cozumel (we've been to Cozumel 4 times now and don't repeat tours).

Unless it has changed significantly since 2003 I would highly recommend it.

I love going to Tulum. It is so beautiful, interesting, and historic. If you haven't been, I highly recommend going there at least once in your life. I just wish they'd move it closer to Cozumel ;)

My first time there was back on my first cruise in 1990. What was interesting at that time is that before it went to Cozumel, the ship actually dropped anchor just off Playa del Carmen. Tenders came out to meet the ship to take anyone to the mainland who wanted to go. After everyone was off the ship and onto the mainland, the ship pulled up anchor and went to dock in Cozumel. That way we only had to take the ferry boat one way on the way back to meet the ship in Cozumel.

Back in 1990 things were also much different once you got to Tulum. Nothing was roped off and you could go anywhere. One of the most popular things to do was to climb the steps to the top of the tallest building, the Castillo. Somewhere I've got a picture of me standing at the top of it.
