what do you do with your passports while off boat?

Choices, choices. You can't have it all. If you take your passport ashore, you risk having it lost, stolen or damaged. If you leave your passport in the room safe, you risk needing it for whatever reason whilst ashore.

Do your own risk assessment and make your independent decision. Never mind what anyone else (including me) does.

FWIW, our river cruise director advised guests that carrying your passport on your person was mandatory in either Croatia or Serbia (I forget which.) However, she did not carry hers. Reason -- she said she could handle explaining why her passport was on the boat, but she could not handle losing it.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

We keep them in the safe. However, if you are cruising in Europe, you may be required to turn them over to the cruise line according to some countries.

I do have colored copies of our passports that I keep with me.

We also always leave ours in the safe and simply carry a photocopy with us.
