Room right by elevator...terrible idea?

You'll have more issues with loud talkers late at night then with any kind of mechanical noise.

 

I agree 100%. I've had a room close to the elevators, and quite often heard people talking very loud, and even yelling at each other. NEVER heard any noise from the elevators themselves. :o

We always choose a room near the mid ship elevators. Very convenient and no problem with noise. The only noise comes from people walking down the hall, but not mechanical noise. Less movement in the ship if you choose a room that is mid ship, too.

While rooms by the elevator are quiet they do have there ups and downs.

I always try to book close to elevators and have never had mechanical noise bother me. As others have said, once in a while it's the rude, inconsiderate people passing by in the hallway that have ever bothered me. Even with that, it doesn't happen all the time. You should be fine.
