We stayed at the Ramada Inn in Metairie. Very nice hotel and they offer a park and cruise package. We paid between $125-$150. Can't remember for sure.

There is a Marriott just across the street from the Convention Center, literally the port is right behind the Conv. Center, also have Embassy Suites on Julia St, also close to port. Stayed there in June, went with DH as he attended Tech-Ed (Microsoft Conv.)

When we cruised from NOLA we stayed at the Westin. It is right outside The French Quarter, we were able to walk everywhere. It is also close to the port. We loved the hotel.

Try the Courtyard by Marriott on 300 Julia St. Its about 2 blocks from the port and is a newly remodeled hotel that is very nice. We booked for around $90/night

Why do you want to be close to the port?

Most hotels in the area of the port/Quarter are within 15 minutes by taxi or car. We always stay at the Frenchmen, in Marigny, which is right past the French Market in the Quarter. Off the beaten track but within walking distance of everything in the Quarter. Reasonable rates and some secured parking for small/med cars.

We booked the Hilton Riverside through Priceline bid, it is next to the port right at the river. You could walk to the port but if you have a car to park, parking is expensive. The Hilton is attached to the Riverwalk shopping area that is currently closed down for a major renovation to reopen in 2014.

Used priceline and got it for $70 a night plus tax

We need a place with free parking as we are driving our car we also are military so getting a good rate is important as well. Also how is parking at the port and how much is it to park at the port.

A couple on our last cruise was retired military and said they usually stayed at the base in Belle Chasse and left their car there and took a taxi to the port. Others stayed just across the river from the cruise port and had free parking and were able to leave their car there for the cruise.
