Nassau? Key west?

Looking for inexpensive options in Nassau. My mom will be in either a manual wheelchair, or possibly a scooter, we haven't decided wheather we are renting a scooter.

 

Is there anything to see that you could get to close, or are there handicap taxi cabs? Would it be possible to get to the Atlantis without booking an excursion?

 

Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

 

Also going to key west if anyone has any ideas for there as well. Really trying to spend $50 pp at the most for excursions at each island since we have been to both places many times. It will be my moms first time in Nassau though.

We just got back from Key West and Nassau. We didn't get off the ship in Nassau as we've been there many time. In Key West if you dock at the Mole (Navy Base) there is a free shuttle service downtown that has a lift. If you dock downtown easy peasy your just scooter off the ship and you are it the hub of it all. Two of us in our group of 4 were on scooters. The Conch Train has lifts so that is a tour you could take or you could just scooter around town...the sidewalks are scooter friendly...this is what we did. We had lunch at Hog's Breath....and scooter to stores etc. No problem mon!

I've been to Nassau a number of times in a wheelchair and you will find things much tougher in Nassau than in Key West. The sidewalks are rough with very few cuts and most stores have steps to enter. I am not aware of any accessible transportation in Nassau. If you have a folding chair and can walk just a little bit then you can use a public taxi. If you have a scooter, power chair, or rigid chair then you are out of luck. I just generally stay on the ship in Nassau or perhaps venture to the straw market. You may certainly take a taxi to Atlantis & look around without purchasing an excursion, however you are very limited in what you can see. They sell passes at the resort so that you may tour the grounds in their entirety.

The taxi vans in Nassau will not take any scooters or wheelchairs as they have seats all the way to the back.

 

Gerard of Courtesy taxis has accessible vehicles upon request of various sizes. His email is gerardblewis@hotmail.com. Do not forget the b after gerard. He is personable and reliable and is only available by pre reservation. Willing to do anything.

 

Atlantis is our favorite as it isvso close. We email Gerard a few weeks before, arrange pick up and return about 5 hours later. A DIG pass from Atlantis main desk is $45 and allows you on the grounds (no water privileges) in addition to the DIG (aquarium and relics) which has 2 ends. We hit the casino, shops and wander on down to the Marina (ramp) where there are more shops and restaurants. Without the DIG pass the casino and shops only are accessible as guards all over looking for proper wristband. Wonderful, fun day. Vicki

My husband and I just returned from a cruise that included Nassua and I was on a 4 wheeled scooter. We went off the ship with the scooter and found a water taxi that was very willing to put my scooter on the boat and get me to the island Atlantis is on. They helped me get to a seat on the boat and then once the boat was full they lifted my scooter down to the boat and tied it on. The sidewalks getting to the boats are a little rough but I was able to manage them. Once off the boat on Paradise Island the walking/scooter route to Atlantis was a little long but I was able to get there without a problem. Once in Atlantis I was able to get around.

In Nassau there is a Straw Market within walking/wheeling distance filled with all kinds of souveniers.

 

Key West has a hop on hop off trolley that is also close to the pier. It will take you to all the main sites near Duval St. Not sure about how accesible the sites are.
