AandBmom Posted February 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2014 I'm thinking of bringing my family to these sights while in St. Maarten. Is it possible with 8 hours in port? What makes most sense? Renting a couple of vehicles, paying for a tour or doing taxis from place to place. We have 11 in our group ranging from age 3-75. Sites: Yoda Exhibit in Phillipsburg ziplining at Loterie Park Butterfly Farm Maho Beach to watch planes and walk around the beach Any help would be much appreciated. Also if it helps I learned that there are 5 ships in port our day.
drdewrag Posted February 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2014 Sounds like a good time for sure! It is a bit ambitious though logistically - especially with 5 ships in port (depending on which 5). Of course, the Yoda is closest to the cruise pier. Loterie Park is in the Interior of St Martin (the northern French side of the Island. The butterfly farm is on the NE side of St Martin below Orient Beach. Then Maho is on the SW side of the island in St Maarten. The traffic is usually nuts around Orient and Maho trying to get back to the cruise pier in the afternoon. There is also a draw bridge that shuts traffic down at 3pm on your return to the cruise pier. The big planes arrive mid day, so you do have time to do something prior to heading to Maho. Have a great time whatever you decide!
drdewrag Posted February 5, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 5, 2014 Getting around on the island is very easy - especially if you'll do your research before you get there. Roadele Rental is who we use when we are there for the week.
AandBmom Posted February 5, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted February 5, 2014 thanks for the info. Any thought on taxi vs rental?
drdewrag Posted February 6, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 6, 2014 Absolutely! With a taxi, you will not be waiting much to be on your way. Once you get off the ship, get on a taxi and on your way! The cabbies know exactly where they are going so you won't get lost. Overall, it will be slightly more expensive than the rental depending on where you decide to go. However, with the rental, you will have to complete the paperwork and perhaps wait for others to do the same - especially with 5 ships in.
