Caribbean Princess 7/16/05...review

Hello All,

Before I start I am saying that this is my observation and that of my husband and that everyone is entitled to have their own opinion.

Here is mine:

Here is my good, bad, annoying, and the ugly:

Good...The ship is beautiful. My minisuites E730 & E728 were great. Huge covered balcony. Plenty of room. Clean. Except tiles in bathroom floor kept falling off. Mattress was a bit beaten up so they brought me the egg crates. That helped. Sheets were very soft. Plenty of shampoo & soap.

My hats off to the Casino staff who took my money, however I won the slot contest and got some back! Also hats off to the teen security squad. They seemed to be everywhere and kept the teens in line. Good idea! There were no problems that I heard of.

Sterling Steak house was great. We ate there two times. To me, this food is what should be served in the regular dining rooms. You shouldn't have to pay extra for it. The service there was very good.

Bad...The food. Well I can't say it was totally bad. It just wasn't great. It all seemed to lack something. The food was bland for the most part. Maybe some people like that, I don't. The buffets had a very poor selection. You can only get orange or cranberry juice in the morning. Who died and made those the pick? By the way, that can't be bacon that they serve. It was terrible. Food lines were long and you could never find a seat to sit down and eat. The menus for lunch were the same in the sit down lunch and the buffet. I remember them being different in the past.

Carribean Pool party...where was the fun? It was a poor excuse. Held in the back of the ship and no ice sculptures, no big food selection, just pastry and some fruit in the horizon court.

Annoying...How the cruise line can up the charges for bingo. It now costs $30 or $40 for a bingo session. I remember when it was $10/15 not too long ago. That's why they never had many people show up. For most of the time it was in Club Fusion. Even the last session. I remember how they used to fill the main show room.

Also, they don't tell you that they double price the medium size drinks. They put two shots in them and charge you double. So that means the large is triple price. Be careful when ordering. I ordered 3 alcohol drinks and 1 non and it cost $37.99.

Finally the ugly...The service. We took the any time program and boy am I sorry. We ate between 7:30 and 8:00 each night. If you don't hava a reservation, be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes (even though they have open tables) I never felt so rushed. The first waiter we had a table 1 in the Palm was so rude and in a rush to get us done , that he hit me in the head with a plate trying to out it on the table. He wasn't even looking. He was rude to my husband who asked for lemons. While we did not eat in the Palm again, the Coral was just the same. Rushed and indifferent.

Overall service on this ship was crappy. I don't want to say that maybe it was because the ship was full, because even if it was, the service should be good. I know that I will not be returning to this ship. I felt that all it was as a Carnival ship in disguise. Maybe since Carnival bought them over they are running them alike. They are certainly not the Grand that I was on in 1999 or the Ocean in 2000. I see that they have cut back in many areas such as food and service and for my liking, I will return to Celebrity.

I am sorry that I may have burst the bubble for future cruises, but I would want to know what a ship was like before I boarded her.

Any questions, please ask.

I thought the idea of the anytime program was NOT to feel rushed! Why would they be rushing you if people were just coming and going as they pleased? I was looking forward to this as we LOVE the NCL freestyle concept!

Also could you please give me some more info on the casino? Were there a lot of slots, any penny ones, a ton of smoke, any snacks at night etc?

Thanks for your help!

A word to the wise. If you are going on the CB, have Anytime Dining, and don't want to wait for a table at a peak time such at 7:30 or 8PM, just call the Concierge right when you board the ship and make a standing reservation for your party at the time of your choice for each night, say 7PM in one of the two Anytime Dining Rooms. That way, your table will be waiting for you, usually without any wait at all. If you find that you need to change the time, just call the Concierge as soon as you know that and it's usually no problem at all. If you don't want to do that, then be prepared to wait to be seated if you are going to show up at a peak seating time, like 7:30 or 8:00PM, just like you would at most restaurants on land.

We got to Morgans a bit later than our scheduled 3:00 meet time. There were not a lot of people there. Also had no way of spotting each other. Did not wait long due to the heat. Sorry we missed you.

I was also on same cruise. I agree totally with your opinions. The grand was much better in 2003 for us. With 500 more people and the same size buffet areas, theater and clubs it was crowded. Was the air conditioning working right? 500 more people use alot of A.C. Thought I was in cozamel a few nights. The cruise staff was great but I only saw the director introducing acts for shows. Most importantly if you like ice cold beer bring your own. Not one bar had ice cold beer. I'll be on the grand next time. Entertainment was good.My only real complaint was when we stepped on board we bought 2 soda stickers for 27.60 each. Not a bad deal but when we got our last day bill they added 8 more dollars to this purchase for a gratuity.

Was on the CB in May and can agree with EVERYTHING in your review and probably more just blocking it out :) Princess has changed since Carnival took over! It is a Carnival ship! 2003 we sailed the Grand right before they took over at least we got one nice criuse in. Will be sailing next year on Celebrity but never again on Princess what a shame it went to that level of service.

We were on CB 7/9/05. Must have been a different ship This was cruise #8 for us, we have been on Carnival, NCL and RCCL. The service weas excellent, no complaints about the Palm, standing resevation @7 each night. Table 65 waiter was super. Maybe my expectations are low or maybe you all have too much time to think....;)

We were on the same cruise and just got home yesterday as we did b2b. We didn't want to get off the ship. We had a fabulous time. We ate in Coral every evening and the service was first class. We booked a standing reservation for 8pm the first week and 8.30pm the second week. We had the best holiday ever.

I was in E730 in June. I forgot about the bathroom tiles. They were falling off all week for us too....probably lost 10 or more tiles. There can't be too many left...I figured they would have fixed that by now. I always left the tiles out for the steward.

Did you happen to look under the TV closest to the balcony. We left some coupons under it and I have wondered if anyone found them. :D

Fran, thanks for your comments. I have to say that our cruise on Caribbean Princess did not measure up in many ways to our previous and subsequent experiences with Princess. I'm curious what drew you to this particular ship in the Princess fleet, from Celebrity. My opinion is that CB and any X cruise would come with a completely different set of expectations, and maybe not understanding the differences lead to some of your disappointment.

Why does everyone complain about Carnival? I am curious as we have been on 3 of them in the last 4 years. The last 2 were the Pride and the spirit which were WONDERFUL in every way. The crowd ranged from Families with children to elderly couples and everything in between. I didn't hear one complaint from anyone during those cruises and we were on the 3rd voyage of the Pride. The service was top notch as was the food and the rooms. Our room steward even picked up our clothes we left laying around. The food in the dining rooms was beyond my expectations. The coffee was GREAT even at the food courts where they have it 24/7 AND you could get lemonade, juices, iced tea, coffee and hot chocolate at any time, even late at night....which is not on the CB from what I have read, so I don't really think you can blame Carnival when their food and beverages seem lightyears ahead of Princess. The Spirit and Pride are considered mega ships in the Spirit Class and I would cruise again on either of those ships in a heartbeat. The food in the food courts were great! Wide variety from deli sandwiches to the stations that switched out from Chinese to Italian. We are booked on the CB for the 9/3-9/10 voyage and I have read many more good reviews of this ship than bad ones. Did you call to have the tiles fixed? If so, what was their response? Just curious. From what I have read from these boards, if you plan on going to the Anytime Dining at peak times, you can expect a wait. We are looking forward to our cruise on the CB and it has been said many times on these boards that a cruise is what you make of it and if you are looking for problems, you will most certainly find them...on any cruise line.

Yes, we were on the same cruise and we had a great time. We did the Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Dawn Princess last year and enjoyed that one. With all the bad reviews I read before our cruise last week I was worried we would not enjoy the Caribbean Princess as much as the Dawn Princess. The Caribbean Princess was even better!

We are scheduled to be on the CB in October and if it is like our past cruises, I will be thrilled. I have spent 7 out of 8 cruises on Carnival owned ships and had a great time on all. The service was fantastic and the crew always very accommodating. The food variety was above board and we loved the deli and Pastry shop on each ship. The specialty restaurants were amazing.

So, for me, if it is like Carnival...bring it on! 7_6_4.gif

I agree with the OP. We sailed on the CB last Feb. and did not like it very much. We had a good time because we make the best of anything. So our attitude helped. But I would not sail on her again. She is basically the same ship as the other Grand Class ships, but with 500 more passengers and it shows. We sailed on the Star in April and the difference was very, very visible. I loved the Star - same ship as te CB with 500 less passengers. We talked with a waiter (PC dining) on the Star who had been on the CB. He said it's awful for the crew. Everything is rush, rush, rush. Waiters don't have time to be a little sociable. He was very happy to be on the Star. A Princess agent said he believes that the new ship coming out this year was scheduled to have more passengers, but they have cut back because of the many complaints about the CB. Now, that said, I have to say to all those with an upcoming cruise on the CB, you will most likely have a good time. There's lots to do, and I recommend the Caribe Deck balcony cabins. They are great. I firmly believe that when traveling, you must go with the flow. Make your own good time. There are good things about this ship, but I opt to take other Princess ships in the future.

I happened to be on the same cruise and found many of your issues non-existent.

We were in B757, and aft balcony with our kids in an interior, B747, right across the hall. Excellent service from Aneth, our room steward, who made up our room anytime we left for more than 10 minutes. No problems with the A/C in either room and the bathrooms were intact--no tiles popping up off the floor. Our kids room was cooler than ours due to the large balcony door in our allowing heat in through the glass, but that is a tradeoff for having a balcony, however, the A/C in our room was still fine.

The food was fine. I don't know what else you could have wanted for breakfast or lunch as the buffet seemed to have everything. The bacon was overdone on some days and just right on others--just depends when you got there. Seating is at a premium at peak times in the Horizon court, but you could often find a seat in the Caribe Cafe which is just aft of the Horizon Court.

We had traditional dining and our waiter Ramil, from the Phillipines was good but had a rather annoying habit of repeating himself. I chalk this up to his wanting to make sure we understood what he was saying as his "accent" took a few days to get used to. Can't respond to the PC dining issues other than say if one plans to eat at peak times, you should expect crowds wherever you dine. I know once I got in, I wouldn't let the wait staff rush me through the meal.

The production shows were okay--pretty much standard cruise line song and dance numbers. The comedians were excellent, but I would suspect these guys rotate around among all the ships so I won't even give their names as they won't probably be on your cruise. Bert Stratton was a riot each night in Crooner's lounge, but after seeing him several times that was enough.

The cruise Director, Neil, was pretty much just an MC at the shows, which if fine because he didn't try to be something he isn't. On other cruises, we have had cruise directors try to be comedians which they fail miserably at and they make you suffer through endless bad attempts at jokes. Neil gave a few standard jokes each show and let the entertainers get on with their job.

I would advise coming early for the shows as the Princess theater is small and good seats fill up fast. Show times also varied during the cruise, sometimes we could make the early show right after early seating and ohter times the first show was at 7 p.m. which meant we had to go to the late show.

Very disappointed in Princess Cay. Tenders in were fine. We got off the ship with the first couple of groups so no big wait. I would suspect it got a little busier later. Our waiter recommended the south end of the beach as it is less crowded and he was correct. All the services, buffet, bar etc. are also there, although the "junk" shops are on the north side. Plenty of loungers on the beach, and we got some under a palm tree to avoid the fold-up cabanas that looked like they cut down any breeze besides blocking the sun. The big problem with Princess Cay is the beach. Water shoes are a must to enter into the water as it is extremely rocky. Construction boots would be better as they would save you from getting a twisted ankle!!! Once out past the rocks, its is sandy, but nothing to look at when snorkling, unless you like sand.

Ocho Rios--We stayed on the ship--We did Dunn's River Falls before and didn't fell like putting up with the Jamaican dope pushers and hair braiders that seem to destroy the experience for tourists. We hung around the aft pool and I would recommend this area for any Cruise Critic parties--plenty of room, it's shady and the bar is right there as well as the back entrance to the Caribe Cafe. Our CC party at Morgans was a bust. We only met one other couple and it was way too hot at Morgan's bar and there was no seating.

Grand Cayman--We rented a jeep through Avis and drove to Rum Point which is about 35-45 minutes away depending on traffic. The rental car agency picks you up at the Blue Iguana gift shop and takes you to their airport office--5 minutes away--where you pick up your car. Also you are driven back to the tender pier when you drop the vehicle off. $79 for the jeep and Rum Point beach is free. Food and drinks available at the beach as well as sea-doos, floats, and a variety of other water sports equipment from Red Sail Sports. The drive around the island showed just how much devastation occurred from the hurricane that hit last year. It will be years before this island is rebuilt. The tenders back to the ship were a disaster, There were six cruise ships in port that day and Pricess was alloted one tender space. Given the fact that Princess was using their life boats as tenders, the could only take 100 or so people on each trip. The line at the tender pier took about 45 minutes to go through and it was hot!!! Princess had a water station where you boarded the tender which slowed things down even more. Instead of people getting on the tenders, they were stopping for water. They should have had staff walking up and down the lines handing out bottled water.

Cozumel--Dowtown was operational, but a lot of storm damage from Emily that hit the Sunday before we got their. The entire shopping complex at the Puerta Maya port where we docked was without electricity and had been for four days. We had an excursion scheduled at a beach club that was closed when we got their in a taxi. A lot of the beach resorts south of the port were heavily damaged. We went into town and browsed the stores, but ended up at Carlos and Charlies for lunch and some liquid refreshment.

All in all, we were very satisfied with our cruise and would recommend this ship to anybody. Your cruise it what you make it. If something doesn't go your way, be flexible and either change to something else or try to get the problem resolved.

It's funny how different people can be on the same ship and have such differing opinions. We felt that the buffet had a pretty good selection of food most of the time. We didn't mind the breakfast at all. I thought the bacon was actually good. We only went down once late at night and it was just sandwich stuff, salad, fruit or a cookie pretty much then. Another couple told us that they went down one night because they missed dinner so they went down like around 9 and everything was gone. They hadn't put out the late night stuff yet and the supper stuff was gone so they just had a piece of pizza that night. Whenever we went there we thought it was fine. Did you go back to the Caribe Cafe part to find a table? We always found a table back there. WE never tried in the HOrizon part as the Caribe Cafe part is so much cooler and less crowded.

We were up on the upper deck watching the Carribean pool party and they offered us at least 5 different horderves. They were walking around up there with all kinds of trays of food. We were so full from dinner that we kept saying no, but there was a lot of selection up there. No ice sculpture though.

As for the bingo I agree completely. We spent $190 playing bingo. We decided that we will not play bingo on our next cruise. We could have more fun doing something else with that money. I enjoy playing bingo but it's just too much money.

I think the most that I got charged was $9 for a large drink and it was huge! I think they were like $6, $7.50 and $9 or something like that. IT depended what you had, but when I looked at my bill it looked like that's about what they were. It was $3.75 for a beer. I didn't think that was too bad. They would be that much in a bar.

WE had traditional dining and it was very nice. We did eat in the Coral dining room one night and I found it less formal, much louder and not as nice of an atmosphere. We did meet some very nice people there, but I wasn't as impressed with the Coral as I was with the traditional dining room (the Island.) I didn't feel rushed and we didn't have to wait for a table at 8 p.m., but it wasn't as elegant. We ate at a table with 8 other people we didn't know, maybe that's why we didn't have to wait. It just wasn't the same caliber dining as the traditional was.

Someone is asking about the casino. I didn't see penny slots. I did see nickel slots and it wasn't too bad for smoke, although the cigar lounge is right by it so it smells bad of smoke right outside the doors. Once you get inside it's not too bad though, especially during the day. They have craps, Carribean Poker etc.

Anyway overall we had a great time. I plan to get my patters out and write a little review of my own including the entertainment and ports of call tonight. I just think it's interesting how different people on the same ship have such differing opinions. This was our first cruise and we had a great time. All I want to do is get back on that ship! It's so depressing to be back home to my laundry and cooking!

Reading Mill 231's reply, I forgot to mention Churchill's Cigar Bar and Stink Emporium.

Whoever had the idiotic idea of placing this den of putrid smells between the Princess theater and the Casino should be flogged!!!

The stench flowed into the theater and the casino and you had to walk through it to get to the shows each night. To make it worse, they would leave the doors to Churchills open all the time.

I would recommend that for the few clients that use this facility, it be put in a tender and towed behind the ship!!!

We only ate in the dinning rooms for all three meals so, maybe the food was just better there. We had grapefuit, tomato and other juices to select from in the morning at the Coral Dinning. The bacon was just OK. No problems getting a seat in the Coral and Palm Dinning rooms.

Carribean Pool party...where was the fun? It was a poor excuse. Held in the back of the ship and no ice sculptures, no big food selection, just pastry and some fruit in the horizon court.

The Ice Carving Demo was Tuesday at 4:00pm

Annoying...How the cruise line can up the charges for bingo. It now costs $30 or $40 for a bingo session. I remember when it was $10/15 not too long ago. That's why they never had many people show up. For most of the time it was in Club Fusion. Even the last session. I remember how they used to fill the main show room.

We paid $10 for three cards for a $500 prize. Another time it was $20 for three cards for a $2,500 prize or you could pay $20 for three cards to win a cruise for two.

Also, they don't tell you that they double price the medium size drinks. They put two shots in them and charge you double. So that means the large is triple price. Be careful when ordering. I ordered 3 alcohol drinks and 1 non and it cost $37.99.

Yes, a double is double the price and a triple is triple the price. We had no problem with that logic.

The service was excellent. My wife has a problem with eating any meals prepared with cream or cheese. The waiter we had let us know which meals were prepared that way or if he/she did not know, they brought over the head waiter. A couple of nights, the head waiter came to our table and brought over the next day's menu. My wife picked the meal she wanted and they pepared it for her so she wouldn't have any problems. We never felt rushed and the waiters were never rude. In fact a few times my wife ordered a dessert, found out it was prepared with cream and they gave her another. No complaints, always very polite. In fact a few nights, we did not like the main meals we ordered and they just gave us another without complaining.

The service was excellent. All the staff were very polite.

We walked by Churchills many times to get to the Princess Theater and the Casino. It did smell as we walked by it but, I didn't notice it in the Casino or the Princess Theatre. Some people are more sensitive to smells than others though.
