Sunset Beach

Thanks rajacks....

After re-reading the above threads a couple times, it dawned upon me that it probably was the hotel. I guess I've got a couple more questions about Sunset Beach.

Because I'm still not going to be in Jamaica til next June sailing on the Conquest, and I've gone to the suggested websites for Sunset Beach...I can't find where the $20 fee is at. Is this just a known thing or am I blind and can't find it???

I guess I'm trying to figure out ball park what I'm looking at for a family of 4. Looks like a $80 for the family, and $40 for cab (To-From)?

How far is Sunset Beach from the Pier?

Thanks for any help!

We went to SUNSET BEACH RESORT in Oct. 2004. Took a Taxi from the port for $5.00 total. Upon arrival at the resort, I was a little surprised to see the armed guards outside at the gatehouse. They escort you into the hotel and see that you get checked in. Upon paying $20.00 and $10 for my DD's, they put your S&S card in an envelope and hold it at the gate. This place was gorgeous! Well worth the money. We snorkeled, ate, drank and partied all day long. My 14 Yr old daughter was able to Kayak and wind surf at no extra charge and all in all have a blast. My 7 yr old just wanted to swim in the pool the whole time we were there. They also had ping pong, pool table, mini golf and they had pool volleyball going on too. Myself I indulged in a few of their daiquiris (yes they are potent...LOL), also enjoyed the food (the Jerk Chicken and grilled fish were heaven to me!). The food and entertainment were excellent. I agree Sunset Beach rocks!!!

Was your lunch included in the $20 fee or was it separate?

Yes everything is included. Its the best money we spent the whole trip. But be warned. The mixed drinks have quite a kick. I am not big drinker so a little went a long way as in a couple too many. Its a great place to go.

OK, Sunset Beach is in Montego Bay. How far away is that from Ocho Rios? How long should/will the cab ride be?

I think that we DEFINITELY will be going to Sunset Beach on our day in Jamaica!!:D

Thank's for ALL the information!!!

When we were at SSB last November for a three-day land vacation, we saw only one jelly fish and it was dead on the beach. We did see some urchins (I slipped and fell on one--not a good thing to sit on!). However, no one can be sure what the jelly fish population will be at any given time--I've been told it can vary from day to day. Kind of like the weather.

Ocho Rios is too far away for you to get to SSB and back in the time that most cruise ships are in port. I was told when we looked into excursions there, that it was nearly a two hour car/taxi trip from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay. We didn't go to OR so I can't say for sure if that time frame is really true.

There are no motorized sports offered at SSB because the waters are a marine park and protected. There is equipment for kayaking, water bikes, and snorkling available to use (you need to sign up for the equipment and they usually let you use it for about an hour). There was supposed to be wind surfing, but we never saw anything available.

There are basketball courts, tennis courts, and a life-size chess board. There is also a pool table and ping pong table. Everything is included in your admission price as well as drinks, food at the grille (best French fries and ketsup--and I don't like either; and make sure you get the jerk chicken), and the buffet. The speciality resturants are not open until 6 p.m. and I've heard that all day pass purchasers have to be out of SSB by 6 p.m.

Whether the waterpark will be open is anyone's guess. We were told it would be open October 2004, then December 1, 2004. When we left on November 29, 2004, there was NO WAY it would be open for a long time. They work so S-L-O-W-L-Y (too many "smoke" breaks). I did read on another post that it is to be open within two weeks. I'll believe it when I see it. I saw some pictures from a relative who were there three weeks ago and it will be a wonder if it is open before 2006! I don't know if they will raise the price once the waterpark is open or not.

I posted about 90 pictures of SSB on Webshots. If you go to Webshots and do a search for janetlcole, you will be directed to the pics.

Two months from tomorrow and we'll be basking on the beach in Jamaica, Mon!

I believe Ocho Rios is about 70 miles from Montego Bay. Do you mean how long is the cab ride from the port in Montego Bay to Sunset Beach? A matter of minutes. If you mean how long the cab ride is from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay, I couldn't say for sure, but I'd imagine it's lengthy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got back from Sunset Beach at Mo bay. It is terrific, and I highly recommend it. Still no water park, but the beaches and pools are beautiful. They have a fun little swim up bar with recipes displayed for a bunch of delicious tropical drinks. I dare you to make it all the way around the wall! There were no jellyfish last week, and it wasn't even crowded. I really expected more people since I had read so much here on the boards. Still just $20, and $3 pp for the cab. I usually just book tours through the cruise line because I am a real sissy about venturing out on my own, but this was a real find! Thanks for sharing, guys!

Enjoy!

We just got back for our Conquest cruise 10/02..

Don't worry about your sail and sign card..they put it in an envelope with your name on it and you pick it up with your reciept when you leave.

The price went up to 30.00 for adults and 15.00 for children because the water park was open.

Will write a review and post pictures in a couple of days! We had good time!

I can't wait to hear more about your trip to Sunset Beach! We did the Rose Hall Beach Club excursion last time and I honestly NEVER wanted to go to Jamaica again after that experience. I was dreading doing Jamaica until I read this thread, and now it's the one port I'm most looking forward to. I am especially interested in hearing about the water park. Thanks!

I think Sunset will be the stop for us. We stayed at the Wyndham Rose Hall in 1999; not impressed, except for the lazy river. My husband lived there!!

Does the new Sunset Beach have a lazy river in the water park? I can't wait to see your pictures.

We were with Tracy in the above post. Our family had a great time. I think the kids enjoyed the lazy river, water slide and pool more than the ocean here. But they did snorkel, did paddle boats and kayaked also. I think it was well worth our money here. I know the kids got their money's worth and probably Tracy and I with the drinks did to. I wouldn't mind going back here and staying for a week!
