Confused about Reserving Entertainment

We are sailing on the Gem in Sept out of NYC. We have heard conflicting info about the need to reserve entertainment on the ship. Do we have to pre-reserve to go to the shows on the Gem. A person told us they went on a NCL cruise and couldn't see any of the shows because they did not pre-book. On "my ncl" the availabitly of reserving dining and excursions is lit up but not the entertainment. One NCL rep told us that this pre booking shows did not apply to the Gem, while another told us it wasn't availlable because they book 30% and we would have to be sure to book on the ship when we first arrived.????? First time on NCL, never heard of prebooking shows before
