Doing a little of everything - rental car itinerary?

Hi folks. We just booked a cruise that will bring us to Cozumel in late December (docked 10:00 to 7:00). We're independent types, and comfortable driving a rental car in "the islands". I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good itinerary that would allow us to do a little of everything: some snorkeling from shore (we have equipment), hanging out for a while at an underpopulated but beautiful beach, lunch at an out-of-the-way restaurant that serves fantastic seafood, an interesting village or two, workshops that sell their own art/crafts, scenic spots in general.

Haven't done it yet. Just starting to plan for a December cruise. Haven't clue about best rental car. Here's the Avis site: http://www.cometocozumel.com/english/rentacar.asp

Why would the eastern road be closed? That sounds like the most scenic part of the island, with some great restaurant recommendations and beautiful, deserted beaches (though generally unsafe for swimming).

BaltoTraveler,

The recent hurricane that hit the Yucutan did a number on Cozumel...mainly the east side which sustained major damage. You will definately need to do some checking before you decide restaurants, etc. There are threads running right now in regards to Hurricane Updates, damage, etc. Some of the parks (Nachi Cocum) have been closed now for a few weeks. Some places do have tentative open dates-some places on the east side (Coconuts) are going to need to be totally rebuilt. One poster w/the screen name of Solita lives in Cozumel and seems to give very honest, up-to-date information. I've seen several of her posts regarding closings/openings, etc. By not being there until December, I'm sure the island will have had more time to heal. Vegetation in a lot of the areas took a real beating. The website islacozumel.com.mx is a good website that does have some updates. Click on the "news" box.
