Early Check-In Time for A NYC Embarkation?

How early does it make sense to arrive for a scheduled 2:00 pm embarkation out of New York? If we arrive early (11 am? Noon?) to beat traffic, get settled and try to avoid the long lines, is it likely that we'll be able to get the check-in process out of the way, so we can just wait to board? Also, how likely is it that embarkation will start sometime before the scheduled time?

We got there at 11:30 and weren't even the first on line BUT it moved fast and we were eating our first buffet by 12:30! No sense wasting the first day when you could be on board.
