New to NCL- Questions re: Star

Recommended Posts

Good evening! My family is looking at the 10/25 sailing on the Star to Cozumel, Belize, Costa Maya, and Roatan. We've previously cruised RCCL 7 times and the Carnival Breeze once. I know the Star is smaller than most of the ships we have been on but honestly the things that matter the most to us are the pool, fun shows and entertainment, and a good casino. How will we fare with the Star?

We're taking that cruise as well on the Star. We mostly sail with NCL and have never been disappointed. My friend has been on the Star, and she really liked it, so I'm assuming we'll have another great experience. Entertainment and food is always good on NCL. Pool looks interesting, although I'm too old for those huge slides, but if you have kids, they'll love it . I've never met a casino I didn't like. :D

We were recently on the Star (you can read my whole review from the below link in my signature).

The casino I can't speak to since we didn't freqent it, only walked through it a couple times.

The pool area is very nice and well kept. Several water slides and multiple hot tubs. And I never saw a single time when all the hot tubs were full of people. Another good thing about being on a "smaller" ship. The pool itself is alittle on the smaller side but good for swimming a couple laps or doing a refreshing dip.

The entertainment onboard was ok. We only went to a couple shows because most of the shows they did on port nights did not interest us. The big show at the end of the cruise is definintely worth seeing.

The one thing we really liked was how much live music there was around the ship. The string quartet in the atrium was awesome and the music acts in Gatsby's were always great.

We love the Star!!!

First time was 2011 in the Western Caribbean (same itinerary you're sailing)

2012 sailed the Star to Bermuda

2013 sailed the Star thru the Panama Canal

Dec 2013 and March 2014 we will be sailing her again to the Western Caribbean (again, same itinerary you're sailing)

Casino is fine...I've never won big but I've also never lost the farm :)

Pool deck can get a bit crowded if you're sailing during a peak period (the water slides take up a lot of real estate on deck). As you're sailing in October that shouldn't be an issue! The only time I've seen it super packed was when we sailed her to Bermuda in June 2012. The ship was FULL to the brim with kiddos...making the pool deck a bit crazy!

The entertainment has always been fabulous. I've always thought that NCL has some of the best entertainment at Sea.

The cabins have all been great. We've sailed on her in an outside obstructed, mini-suite and full suite. All have been great.

The food has always been good and the service has always been amazing. The crew on the Star has always gone above and beyond.

Have a great vacation!!!

The Star is an older ship, but we liked it. The only part I really did not like was the stadium style deck layout by the pool. I felt like I was a dolphin swimming in the water with a crowd of people waiting for me to do a trick. Also, the Jacuzzis were only luke warm during the entire cruise (may have just been a electrical/maintenance problem during my sailing). The pool area, as a whole, was just crowded with the chair design and the slides. Everything else was just as normal on NCL. No issues that I recall, but I really think 1/2 of the cruise experience depends on your own attitude. With that being said, I do try and only book with newer ships. I sailed on the Epic and just fell in love with the modern cabins, the dueling piano bars, and the edgy/modern bar and store fronts. I am booked on the Escape next year and cannot wait. Have fun on the Star, she is older but a nice ship.
