Courtesy phones play messages?

I'm not getting straight answers anywhere else I ask this question. Haven't called Carnival yet as that is last resort. I have been informed there are courtesy phones throughout the ship (Dream) in certain areas. What I would like to know - specifically - is this: can you pick up one of those courtesy phones and check your cabin phone messages or do you have to go to your cabin to do so?
