Jules1 Posted April 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2004 We've used walkie talkies aboard ship before - we have the ones that go 1-2 miles (I think). They don't work very well. Does anyone have experience using the new ones with the 5 mile range? Do they work better than the older ones? Thanks for your help! derf5585 Posted April 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Remember that a ship is mostly metal. And radio waves don't go thru metal very well. Laura61 Posted April 12, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 12, 2004 We used our 5 mile range ones last March on the Grand and had no problems at all.
Jolimont Posted April 12, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Our 5 mile worked well most of the time, but not always. We found if one of us was in the open air it worked better. starsjohn Posted April 12, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 12, 2004 My older Motorola units worked great to 4 miles although only rated for 2 miles. Go with the better quality units and use the subchannels to elimanate the other users. John
pattie63 Posted April 12, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Our 5 mile worked well on the Coral (and our cabin was all the way aft) IF we were out on the balcony. My husband would "beep" me on the walkie talkie and I could step outside to actually talk. Worked great. srphnx Posted April 12, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 12, 2004 Our little costco cheapies worked great in Alaska, from shore to ship in one case. No walkie talkie thread is complete without an admonition about their usage. Please be considerate and use them as needed, not in crowded areas and briefly when you do. It only takes a few radio assisted loud mouths to start these boards on fire, so let's not give anyone any fuel. Happy cruising, we use channel 9 sub 5...little not at work humor. Alaska Diamond Princess 05/04 Mercury 06/02 Rhapsody o.t. Seas 05/98 Legend o.t. Mully too Posted April 13, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2004 I have a question regarding Walkie Talkies. Did you have to register them with the FCC to get a license before using them? Thanks for any info. Jan
