Seabiscuit66 Posted August 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2015 First time to cruise Caribbean, should I arrange a shore excursion in advance of arriving port of Progreso (Yucatan)? Any suggestions?
AKman2495 Posted August 12, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2015 I've been to Progresso and there is not much there. There are some Maya ruins, though. One is close by both the other is a longer drive. OH....and the pier is 5 miles long. Yes, I said 5 miles. If you want to walk it, when you get to the end, there is not much there. We took an ship's excursion to the closer ruins and had no trouble at all. I would be nervous driving around that part of Mexico in a cab for small tour bus. I would stick w it ship's excursions. Talisker92 Posted August 13, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2015 When I planned to visit Progresso, I asked a friend of mine which Mayan site I should visit, Chichen Itza or Uxmal. H recommended Uxmal, as it is less crowded and very interesting. That was what I did and was not disappointed.
Seabiscuit66 Posted August 14, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted August 14, 2015 Thanks for the tip. Another question, I understand it is a long haul on the pier. Is there shuttle or do I have to hoof it?
Sixtytwo Posted August 14, 2015 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2015 Welcome to the forum, Seabiscuit! When we visited we also did the Uxmal excursion and it was a really good one. The ride is pretty long but the bus driver at least offered a cold beer along the way! The bus for the excursion met us right at the ship so I don't really know if there are other options to get from the ship to the shore. But, once there, about all I remember being there were several tents where locals were selling their trinkets.
AKman2495 Posted August 14, 2015 #6 Share Posted August 14, 2015 I believe there are local shuttles there, but as I took a ship's tour, I really didn't look into it. It is an interesting drive from the ship to the shore, though as it is a rather narrow causeway.
