Vancouver and tipping

A bit of a weird question.

 

We are going into Vancouver a day early for our cruise to Alaska and I don't want to take a lot of Canadian money any buying; If I buy anthing I am going to use my charge card. What I would like to know is when tipping the porters at the Vancouver docks what do you think they would rather have Canadian dollars or American dollars? Or better yet what should I tip then in?

We had no problems paying for our tips and taxis from the amtrak station to the cruiseport with US money. If the fare was $12CAD we just gave the taxi driver $12 US plus a tip. Same for luggagae a buckUS a bag tip.
