Anyone ever had a suprise upgrade at pier?

However, it was one of our Carnival cruises. We had a Cat. 11 suite and they upgraded us to what NCL would call an owner's suite I guess; Cat. 12.

See ya,

Mary

That's a nice upgrade. The category 12s are pretty nice.

Just curious if anyone's ever been surprised with an upgrade on the day of sailing? If so, what kind of upgrade (from interior to interior, etc.)?

Never! Plus, every sailing has always had a sign posted that says something to the fact that due to a full sailing, there are no upgrades available.

My DH and I have been upgraded on every RCCL cruise we've been on except the first one. I have a funny story about our first upgrade. It's a long story so you might just want to move to the next message. ;)

We had booked a balcony cabin that we had chosen for it's location on the ship. We were sailing on the same ship we had sailed the previous year (our first cruise). We were sailing out of Miami and had booked the airline and pre-stay hotel through the cruise line.

At the hotel the morning we were to embark, we went to the ballroom to check in for our cruise (saves time at the peir). When I looked at the documents I noticed that the cabin number had changed. I was very worried that there had been a mistake so I went back to my room and tried to call my family to check on line to see what type of cabin that was. I had visions of being in an inside cabin when we paid for a balcony (I was still very new to the whole process).

I couldn't reach anyone to check the cabin for me so I went back to the ballroom to ask someone there. The people there couldn't tell me. Well, I decided to just get on with it. I could get it fixed once we made it to the ship.

Once we reached the pier, we were heading through the terminal when we passed this little sign on a post. At first we passed by it but then we went back and read it. I'm not sure what possessed us to go back but I'm glad we did. The little sign said "If your cabin number is" then it gave a list of about 12 numbers "please proceed to the commodores lounge". Well, our cabin number was on that list. We asked someone there where the lounge was and he pointed to a door at the other end of the check-in area.

When we got there we found a private check-in desk and a lounge with drinks and snacks. Since we had checked in already the person at the desk directed us to another door. We were lead to the ship on a private gangway where there was no line. We were escorted to our cabin by a very nice gentleman. At this point, I still didn't know what type of cabin we would be in but I had a pretty good idea that it wasn't going to be an inside cabin. We were escorted to a grand suite where we spent the next week. It was a wonderful cabin and a fantastic cruise. :)

We've been hooked on cruising ever since. We're about to take our 9th cruise in December and I'm just as excited as I was the first time. :)

CS,

I have to say, the only cruiseline that has upgraded us was RCCL (three out of four cruises were upgraded). I've been on Celebrity (three cruises) and Carnival (one cruise) as well and neither of them has offered an upgrade. This is my first cruise on NCL and I know already that I've recieved an upgrade from a category AG to a category AF. I'm hoping for an up-sell opportunity to a romance suite. :)

Sorry for the long winded replies. I'm home sick today and I think the medication is going to my head. :D

This post caught my attention because we are hoping for an opportunity for an upsell on our November Sun cruise. Lots of cancellations due to the move from New Orleans to Houston - and so far, lots of suites open.....keeping our fingers crossed. We are latitudes, and booked this one on the ship early, so hopefully all of these factors will account for something, although from what I have read from friends here, there seems to be no reason how NCL upsells work....We'll just keep praying to the upsell Gods.....

Booked a low outside room at last minute for Majesty sailing to Bermuda, and got upgraded to the high end C catagory. Room did have a lifeboat in front of it, but a great gap, wasn't really all that obstructed. Didn't ask for it, didn't call for it, didn't inquire at the ship check-in, just showed up in docks by surprise.

A pier upgrade is when your docs say a different cabin than you get when you check-in at the pier. In other words, it's a last minute free upgrade that is a wonderful surprise. Since NCL fills their higher end cabins thru the upsell desk, it's highly unlikely you will score one of these at the last minute. Happy Sailing!

My daughter and I received one when checking in at Ft. Lauderdale for boarding the QE2 in January 2004. All our documents and luggage tags already had our cabin number on them and when we checked in, they said we would be in cabin XXXX. We said, But our documents say "XXX". We had been upgraded to a larger cabin and "loved" it! Turned out our restaurant was the more upscale one, also

We have never been upgraded on Celebrity, Carnival or HAL. However, we did travel with family over last Easter, welcoming a nephew home from Iraq. They had booked an inside cabin but when they arrived were given a suite! Everyone says that never happens! Since I had posted on this board that this cruise was in his honor does it mean that HAL pays attention to the boards??? Noone else in the group was upgraded although others were not booked in inside cabins.

The OP is asking about NCL pier upgrades. Every CL has a different upgrade policy so any story other than NCL is not applicable. I'm curious if any NCL cruiser had docs for one cabin #, website said the same cabin #, but it was changed when they arrived at the pier. I think this is what the OP is asking. It's nice to share last minute upgrade stories but newbies do not realize that every CL has a different upgrade policy so it can confuse them as to what they can hope for theirs. Happy Sailing!

They do, but like any other cruiseline, who knows the criteria to be upgraded. I don't think any of them have a set pattern or rhyme or reason. I do like the fact of the upsell, sometimes deals can be had and its not a 'luck' potshot in the dark.

Had an upgrade from guaranteed balcony to a suite on RCCL "Radiance".

Didn't know our cabin # till we arrived at pier and was told we would have to wait a few minutes for our keys as the Captain had them and where we famous lmao

The suite had 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms a large balcony with two sun loungers, DVD, Video etc. etc.

But to top it all we had Cards for the Concierge Room with, free drinks n nibbles from 6.pm to 9.pm. including Champagne

Thought I was in heaven lol

You're right, I was specifically asking about NCL but it's always fun to hear any kind of upgrade story. Doesn't sound like NCL does the surprise, at the pier, upgrades.

Your best bet to upgrade for a nominal cost is to contact them and advise you are interested. Happy Sailing!

Oh, I've been contacting them every day for an upsell. We're cruising in less than 2 weeks and all they have left is the higher category cabins. Every day I've been told that they haven't released them for upsells yet.

That's why I was wondering if maybe they'd do complimentary upgrades. They have so many suites left and so little time left for upselling.

I guess I'll just have to keep calling. And yes, there's a notation on my booking that I'm interested.

Thanks for the help.
