Tulum Excursion from Cozumel?

Has anyone taken an excursion into Tulum, primarily the town/beach, but maybe also the ruins? I see it's about 1.5 hours from Cozumel. I know the ship does some ruins excursions, but I'm looking for something with more flexibility. Worried about doing it myself, because of getting back to the ship in time and navigating the roads.

Would appreciate advice! Thanks!

That is a very valid concern and unless you have a 10 hr (or more) port day, I would not chance it. Are you talking about renting a car? That will add time onto your day as well. Taxi to ferry, ferry to mainland, go to car rental, drive to Tulum, explore, drive back to car rental, walk back to ferry, taxi back to ship. Doesn't give you a lot of flexibility.

I wouldn't chance it. I've spent weeks in the area on the mainland and while I "might" rent a car, I usually just taxi, or hire a driver for a few hours. Sooooooo much easier. There are a number of taxi drivers just a short walk from the ferry pier in Playa del Carmen. I would think negotiating with one of them to take you for a few hours would be much more efficient than renting a car.

But again....ONLY if you have a really long port day. Tulum proper is just OK. We had fun walking around, but it's just OK. Great deals on shopping, though. Not nearly as touristy as San Miguel or Playa, so better deals. Tulum Beach area is gorgeous and exactly what you'd expect from a laid back beach resort area. The Tulum ruins are not my cup of tea. I enjoyed Coba ruins MUCH more.
