A "Club Crawl" aboard the Disney Dream

Some friends and I are sailing on next week's (12/7-11/15) four-day Bahamas itinerary. The last full day is at-sea, so we're planning a "Club Crawl" -- an on-board pub crawl -- that afternoon-evening. I tried this on the Magic's repositioning cruise (Barcelona to San Juan, September 2014), and while the officers and crew would not condone or sponsor this adult activity, they didn't prohibit it either.

Here's the plan: we start at the top deck [Outlook, deck 14], and visit each and every bar accessible to guests*, have one beverage -- ideally the signature drink for that bar -- and move on. The rules are to be responsible guests:

-Balance adult drinks with non-alcoholic beverages, and eat as we go;

-Police ourselves - no rude, obnoxious behavior;

-Pace ourselves - this is a marathon, not a sprint; and most importantly

-Have fun!

The crawl will last until we reach the lowermost Club [bon Voyage, 3], or until it's dinner time.

At each stop, we ask the host/hostess to take a group photo. (I'm thinking of buying a souvenir autograph book on board and asking the server for her/his autograph as well).

We've done this at Epcot (Beers Around the World-Showcase) and at the Magic Kingdom Resorts (Beers Around the Monorail). Lots of fun for grown-ups!

Has anyone else tried this on a Disney ship?

*On yet another prior cruise, a host told us at a beer-tasting seminar that there are 17 bars aboard the Disney Magic. Many of them are inaccessible to guests because they're attached to a dining room, plus the two that are for crew members only.

My mom & I are on that voyage. That sounds like so much fun - very Epcot :cool:

I forgot to mention so I am editing - I have not done this on Disney but we have done a cabin crawl on Cunard - the bigger suites offered drinks. But the Disney version sounds much better!

Sounds like something that would be fun to arrange for the Transatlantic in September!

You should have at least five days at sea to choose from. And the seas were incredibly calm despite the fact that there was a tropical storm brewing out there.

A couple of tips for planning ahead:

+ It's easier to get forgiveness than permission - I asked the cruise staff prior to our crawl and they weren't very encouraging. I don't know why: they have the wine/beer/whiskey/martini tasting sessions, which seem to be very popular.

+ Make sure everybody who plans to participate is signed up for late dinner seating. Or just grab dinner at one of the snack bars, order room service or hit the buffet. We got as far as deck 4 when the early dinner crawlers had to bale out on us.

Maybe that is the answer to your question - they charge extra for those - while a group is buying drinks on their own and it is not a controlled environment. Maybe they are afraid the group will be a bit rowdy :eek:

But Disney parks sell drinking passports on the other hand!

we've done this on our past 3 disney cruises - two on dream and one on magic. a friend we travel with organizes it. we don't tell disney ahead of time; just meet at the first bar (usually the cove bar in the adult area) and switch bars every half hour.

we do themed trivia (first year was peter pan, then mary poppins, and this year was finding nemo). so at every stop we answer 3 questions and the judge reads the answers out and allocates points. it's all very silly - you can get points for the right answer, but also for dressing up in the theme, or for a funny answer. at the last bar the judge tallies up the points and the winner usually gets a small gift (like a $20 disney gift card). we also have a specialty drink at each bar, that usually matches the theme.

it's been a really fun way to get to know people. the bartenders seem to like it ok because they get a lot of orders/tips. we've never gotten the stink-eye or anything from any crew.

we do it at night, from 10-midnight. maybe that's why no one cares if we crowd the bar. :D

Depending on how many crawlers we assemble, and what kind of mood we're in, the trivia questions seem like fun. Do you use cards from the Disney Trivial Pursuit game (borrowed from the ship's library)? Or make up the questions before-hand/off-the-cuff?

The couple I'm traveling with are first-time DCL passengers, although they're even bigger Mickey fans that I am. From what I've told them, they're really looking forward to visiting the nightclubs after 9 PM (they love to dance). We can play this by ear... or Mouse-Ears, so to speak.

Oh and Axelskater, you and your mom are welcome to join us. The cool this about this kind of crawl is that people can join and split-off as they please. Why not plan to meet at the Outlook at 2 PM on Thursday?

our friends who organize the crawl just watch the movie again beforehand and come up with the questions. they write them down and bring them along, and then read them out in each bar. they bring paper and a bunch of pens and each person or team writes down their answer, then turns it into the questioner/judge, who reads the answers aloud and tallies up points.

it's easy to make up the questions when it's themed to a particular movie. for general disney trivia, i'd probably use the game cards, unless someone in your party already knows a lot of trivia they could turn into questions, or unless you want to watch a *lot* of movies... :p
