Getting off the ship at tender ports??

On past Carnival cruises they have used the colored dot system to show you have booked a shore tour with the ship. I hear talk about tender tickets on this site. Could someone explain the process to me. We are leaving on the Valor in two weeks. I would like to figure out how to get off the ship in a timely manner without booking an excursion through Carnival.

You can pick up "tender tickets" [first come/first served] in one of the lounges. The time/location will be in your Capers. Ticket will note which tender you are on. "Open Tendering" [no tickets required] starts 2-3 hours after tendering begins.

No tickets needed to ride the tender back to the ship
