Hotel in San Diego

Would like some suggestions for both a one night pre-cruise and a 2 night post cruise for San Diego.. January 2006

For the pre-cruise night, Holiday Inn at 1335 N. Harbor Drive is the closest to the pier.

 

For the post-cruise, you could try Coronado

- Hotel del Coronado

- Loews Coronado Bay

- Coronado Marriott

 

or Mission Bay

- Bahia Resort

- Catamaran Resort

 

or La Jolla

- The Lodge at Torrey Pines

 

or Old Town, the desert, the mountains, an Indian casino resort, etc. What kind of environment do you want? What do you want to see?

Totally agree wtih the previous poster, Coronado is one of my favorite places in the world, so beautiful! I always stay at the Lowes, beautiful rooms, great views, have breakfast overlooking the marina, can't be beat!

 

The Hyatt in San Diego is also a nice location, can walk to downtown and the Marriott in Downtown is also a nice hotel.

We have never been to San Diego.. so we are open to suggestions on what to see and do.. Our previous cruises went out of Fort Lauderdale..

As mentioned the Holiday Inn on the Bay is across the street from the port -there is also several hotels close - BestWestern Bayside, Embassy Suites, etc. There are also motels like Super8 Bayview which are relatively close - and offers a shuttle - however it is a motel and does not have a lot of amenities. For places to eat - if you like Italian, the pier is close to Little Italy section of San Diego and I would recommend Fillipis - good food, wine and a little Italian grocery store in the front of the restuarant. There will be a line so you will have to wait but the wait does go fast. There are a lot of good restaurants in the Gas Lamp District of San Diego.

Coranado is nice and has some good places to eat, too.

Coronado is my home, so I highly recommend it for first time visitors to San Diego. Fair warning though, you may fall in love with the place and decide to move here. That's what happened to me :).

 

For things to do -- you have to take weather into account. Winter is our most variable time of year, and in January you may have pouring rain, 85 degrees and sunny, or fog you can't see 10 feet in. If it's nice out, the zoo is world famous. They tell you that themselves, but it really is an excellent collection with a new baby panda that should be on exhibit by then. There's also the wild animal park, which is run by the zoological society. It's about 45 minutes from downtown, but it's a huge tract of land with many types of animals living together and roaming freely in enclosures that you view from a monorail. If you're into golf, you can do that. The original Sea World is here. Do Legoland if you have little ones. There are ships to explore at the maritime museum, you can also go on the Midway aircraft carrier near ther. Free stuff includes walking on the beach or along the harbor, shopping at Seaport village (touristy, but pretty views.)

I grew up in Coronado and my husband and I still have property both in Coronado and Pacific Beach. If I were you I would definetly stay at the Marriott in Coronado. You can walk everywhere. The hotel is right on the bay and you can catch the passenger ferry to SD. Horton plaza,Sea Port Village are right there. The gaslamp district in downtown SD is great fun at night.
