shore excursions

we will be going on explorer of the seas on dec 4/05. rcl excursions are only a few dollars more than private tours, should we take them or save a few dollars (about $5 each person) with private tours.

also rcl has a one day tour to cancun($49 each) has anyone ever taken this one day tour to cancun?? would anyone recommend it??

 

any help would be appreciated.

We have done private tours as well as ship's tours. There are some tours that are only offered through the ship, such as the America's Cup Regatta in St. Maarten, so if you want to do that one, you have to go thru the ship. I would also take a trip that went far away through the ship; otherwise, I do private excursions. They may only be a few dollars cheaper, although it is usually more than that, but they are usually a LOT less crowded. Some of them go to more spots than the ship's tours, too, such as excursions in Grand Cayman.

 

I always check the tours times to give me plenty of leeway, but have never heard of a private tour being late. We are their bread-and-butter and they know that we here on CC have big mouths!

 

Cancun is quite a ferry ride from Cozumel. I would think about taking that one through the ship, myself. I did have friends, though, who went over there on their own on our last cruise and did fine.
