Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island. It's actually relatively large but the far western section is fenced off and is the private area. You would not have access to most of the island. The beach activities previously mentioned are all there is to do. And they host a free cookout, as mentioned. You can stroll down the beach in either direction but away from the private beach area it's very rocky along the coast (but walkable) and inland is almost completely Thatch Palms and other thick brush. The NCL area also has a couple shopping straw market style huts with not a lot to buy.

The island directly south of Great Stirrup Cay is officially called Little Stirrup Cay but is better known as Coco Cay. That's Royal Caribbean's private island. One of their ships anchor there nearly every day while ships call on GSC far less often.

I was on the NCL Dawn last year, and thought this stop was a waste. Think Coney Island on Labor Day-- yes-- it get's THAT crowded! Next time, I'll just stay on the ship.

If you decide to go-- make sure you take the FIRST tender of the day. Stake out a chair, and get into the water quickly before the crowds get there. The snorkeling isn't very good at all.

It was a truly disappointing part of an otherwise wonderful trip.
