CatskillsMom Posted October 25, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 25, 2005 I need some opinions on which travel book(s) to purchase: Who covers the Ports of Call best? Frommers...Fodors...someone else? If it makes a difference, we're leaning towards the Eastern or Southern itinerary in the winter. Thank you!
immargaret Posted October 25, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Personally I would forget the port of call books, and just gather all your information from the CC Ports of call boards... If your really looking for books, maybe the library and you should be able to get them all.
CatskillsMom Posted October 26, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted October 26, 2005 You're right. I just looked under Tortola and found all kinds of great info that a formal book probably wouldn't tell me. Thanks for the tip!
AmandaNS Posted October 26, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 26, 2005 DH and I have Frommers, and we've always found it helpful. You can't beat the info on this board, but the advantage of having a good book is that if you're on the ship and one of your ports gets changed, you can check out the new place in the book without having to spend $$$ for internet time. Plus, if you're like me and like some good get-you-in-the-mood-to-cruise bathroom reading  then you simply need a book. The ol' laptop just doesn't cut it. :D Maybe we should start a poll... how many folks will take their laptop in for "reading time".... :D :D
voyageur Posted October 26, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 26, 2005 If you haven't been... I much prefer the Southern.. Love Barbados, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Isla Margarita, etc... and if you love heat... the weather is much more predictible there - HOT.
immargaret Posted October 26, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 26, 2005 The books offer a bit of history and culture of the ports. The CC boards offer more specialized cruise visit information...what to do in limited time, and are not quite so out-dated. Maybe a combination of both would be advisable. beth4652 Posted October 26, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 26, 2005 I purchased both Frommer's and Fodor's as I was planning this cruise. I opened Fodor's once. Frommer's has a wealth of information. As another poster said, the Ports of Call boards are wonderful. I have used both and feel that I have a better idea about the islands that if I had used only one reference. That's why high school teachers and college professors insist that their students cite several different reference sources.
