Sequim88 Posted August 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2016 In the very very early Juneau pre-planning and investigating stage for 2nd visit to Juneau. Just came across the DIPAC - Macaulay Hatchery and it looks very interesting and is on the bus route to Glacier Gardens. Might even catch the early part of the salmon run by mid-June. For $5 is looks pretty reasonable even with $2 to re-enter the bus. Worth visiting? Having grown up in Seattle eating cheap Alaska canned salmon (25 cents a can in late 1950's) and living near the fishing fleets at Ballard I've had a long connection to the fish. tee_harbor Posted August 12, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2016 I like the hatchery. It's small but interesting. I believe the $5 gets you the tour/explanation of salmon migration too. Although it's technically on the bus line, you may want to consider renting a car with which you can see a number of 'off the beaten track' sights and not be on anyone's schedule. traveltime3400 Posted August 12, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 12, 2016 We loved the hatchery! We got there after it was closed but we still were able to watch the fish. It was fun to cheer them on as they jumped down the ladder.

You could just come to Issaquah in late-September - October and visit our hatchery. Even more fun if you come for Salmon Days the first weekend of October, if you can handle the crowds. No charge for admission! :D
