Marche Hours?

The market of Papeete remains the true centre of attraction of the city, with its irreplaceable heart and its history. Animation is perpetual there. Environment beats highly every day, from 5am in the morning to 5:30pm. You will find in the “Marche de PAPEETE” heaps of memories and fresh products, in a special environment. The market of PAPEETE has a great number of shops and artisanal stands not to miss on the first floor. One whole morning could be devoted to it if you are in the search of some original gifts.

Do not forget to buy vanilla of Tahiti or tahiti vanilla, it is the best in the world! And the best place to buy the tahiti vanilla is in Raiatea, in the store named "Vanira" of Mrs CHANE Jeanne in downtown Raiatea. Consult the following link http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=240883 for additional details about tahiti vanilla. I hope to have been useful and hope to be able to help you or others in the future.

“Bon voyage”.

The "Marche de Papeete" is opened :

Monday thru Saturday: 5AM to 5:30PM

Sunday : 5AM to 9AM

On Sunday, the market closes very early at 9am. However, it is the day that one should not miss in any manner. It is the great day of shopping for the locals. There is a pleasant animation around and inside the market. It is the day when all the local products of the season are exposed and sold. Advice: the prices drop down at the approach of the closing time. Provide your cameras, they are authentic and exotic moments to memorize and to view with your family or your friends around a good fire of winter once returned to your country. Indeed, fish, meats, fruits, vegetables, grilled meat, pastry making, flowers..., all are there. The local products are everywhere. To taste with the eyes and the palate! Enjoy.

Again, best tahiti vanilla can be bought at Mrs CHANE Jeanne’s vanira light blue shop in downtown Raiatea if you have the chance to visit this Island (Raiatea with her sister Island “Tahaa” named “the Vanilla Island”). Details are here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=240883 or visit her web site http://www.tahitivanilla.biz/index2.htm. You can also email to me via her web site, I am the webmaster.

  • 10 months later...

There are very few shops open on Sunday. We were even finding it difficult to locate an open restaurant that wasn't in one of the hotels. Food is very pricey in Papeete. We bought some bagettes and pastry at the grocery store and ate this for breakfast for 2 days.

As far as the market hours, I found this info on the Tahiti Nui travel site, it said the market is open daily from 5am to 6pm.

We rented a car and did a circle tour of the island. The island is very beautiful and it is a shame more people don't attempt to get out of Papeete to appreciate it. We went to the blowhole and we had a great time and have some very funny pictures. If you cross the street there is a huge gush of air that comes through the mountainside when the water from the blowhole recedes.

We also visited a waterfall; there are actually 3 in the same area, but we were getting eaten alive by the bugs, so we only saw the one. Bring your bug spray and use it liberally if you go inland. Not everyone was prepared.

We were fortunate to see plenty of surfers, too.

You will have a wonderful time. It is truly paradise!

Open daily from 5 A.M. to 6 P.M., the marche reaches its peak of activity very early on Sunday mornings, when Tahitian families come to shop for their Sunday dinner.
