I was wondering if anyone has any experience in working on cruise ships or if people know the ins and outs of the industry.

In particular P&O Aus.

Im thinking about a see change...

Firstly, cruise ship companies always look for a few fundamental criteria when it comes to the hiring of stuff, and it's advisable that you ensure that these come across strongly in your application. For example if you are hair stylist mention your skills in that area in your resume.

I might be able to help out a little on this one. I work in the music/entertainment Industry in the UK as a professional DJ/Musician/Producer. I don't know the system in Aus but in the UK generally you only get booked as an entertainer if you have a recognised agent. A friend of mine does book for cruise ships. So your better to contact or send your demo's to the agents that the cruise lines use rather than directly to the cruise company themselves. Its like anything in the entertainments industry a lot of getting a decent position is about who you know, not what you know. I am sure if your a DJ you know that already. Getting a decent gig is often about luck, knowing someone, being in the right place at the right time, having a very good reputation or all 4.

I know a few people who have worked on ships in various capacities. If your an entertainer you get quite well looked after and get time off and time to see the ports etc... You also get permission to go out on deck and in public areas. I know someone who worked as a casino dealer and although the hours were long they also got a lot of privileges. A girl I was at uni with worked as a bar tender and she got a lot less in terms of privileges. They were not allowed on deck or in public areas when they were not working and only went ashore or a rota basis.
