Dinner is assigned seating in the dining room. Breakfast and lunch, if you choose the dining room is basically open seating. They will fill up tables as people arrive, so you will be seated at a table (not your usual one), with people you do probably do not know. The Windjammer for meals is on a find your own seat basis.

Hey hockeychic, you do not say which ship you are on, but they are all essentially the same set up. As Honey's Gal said, you will have assigned seating at dinner. Your table number will be on your Seapass card (room key) when you get it. We always like to go find our table in the afternoon after boarding so we know where to go that night. Also, if it is in a really bad location, you can request a change.

You can always use the WindJammer for dinner if you prefer open seating or a more casual setting.

We have found that we prefer using the Windjammer for breakfast and lunch. It is buffet style as opposed to restaurant style service in the dining room, but it takes less time and there is usually a very good selection. Most all ships have an "eggs to order" station in the Windjammer at breakfast where you can get custom creations. On some ships you have to hunt around for it.
