baseball mom Posted December 4, 2005 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2005 We are sailing on VOS on 12/17 and would like to go to the beach on our own. Sounds like Seagrapes Beach is good beach. I'm wondering if you can rent snorkeling equipement (including lifevests) and if the snorkeling is good there. Any info would be appreciated. TheWog Posted December 5, 2005 #2 Share Posted December 5, 2005 I did not try it, but I did see snorkeling gear available for rent.
gpension Posted December 5, 2005 #3 Share Posted December 5, 2005 I just got back from Sea Grape. It is a gorgeous beach, and they do rent snorkel equipment, but this is not the best snorkeling area. We went to Eden ROck and saw magnificent sea life. We went there directly from the pier, then took a cab to Sea Grape after ($5.00 pp each way). IT was a perfect day! baseball mom Posted December 6, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted December 6, 2005 I appreciate the info. Can you tell me a little more about Eden Rock? Did you go on your own or with a tour? How far from the pier - did you walk or take a cab? Do you just snorkel right off the beach? Are there chairs/umbrellas for non-snorkelers? Thank you. bruce-r Posted December 6, 2005 #5 Share Posted December 6, 2005 I appreciate the info. Can you tell me a little more about Eden Rock? Did you go on your own or with a tour? Eden rock is a do-it-yourself event that is free if you own your own gear. There are 2 dive shop there if you need to rent anything. http://abanksdivers.com.ky/ and http://www.edenrockdive.com Check out their websites for directions and other information. They also rent lockers for your stuff while you snorkel. How far from the pier - did you walk or take a cab? If you tender into Georgetown, make a right as you walk to the road along the water front. Just follow this map: Do you just snorkel right off the beach? Are there chairs/umbrellas for non-snorkelers? If you idea of a beach includes sand that goes out into the water, Eden rock is not a beach, it is a site. The shore line all along there is Ironshore. That is why the snorkeling is good there. Snorkeling off of sandy beaches is generally not very good. There are steps down into the water.

Gregor4500 Posted December 10, 2005 #7 Share Posted December 10, 2005 That is good to know. I'll be there in March and was planning on bringing a mask and snorkle. Is any other gear needed?
zydecocruiser Posted December 10, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 10, 2005 If you tender into Georgetown, make a right as you walk to the road along the water front. Just follow this map: Actually most tenders dock just south of what is indicated - either at the north or south terminal. but be that as it may, you can rent whatever gear you want or need for the day at Eden Rock area and snorkel wherever. It might be 100 yards or so from the South/North terminal to Paradise Restaurant / Abanks and not a whole lot more to Eden Rock Dive. There is a sand patch (man made aka dump trucked) by Paradise restaurant. There is some snorkeling off of Courtyard Hotel - just north of Seagrape Beach, but nothing I would make a special trip for. The beach and Calico Jack's? Well, maybe. ;) I posted a buch of assorted pics in this thread..: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=159999

Anyway, it does get the message across.
gone_cruisin Posted December 11, 2005 #10 Share Posted December 11, 2005 Looking at your map from the pier to Eden Rock, I am assuming that it is within walking distance.....am I correct? And also, double checking to see if it "free" or do we have to get permission to snorkeling off the shore? We have been to GC before and did the stingray, now we just want to relax and do some snorkeling without a group. Thanks for info anyone can provide. sallyb Posted December 11, 2005 #11 Share Posted December 11, 2005 Now I'm confused- when you get off the tender, do you turn left or right to walk to Eden Rock? Thanks
bruce-r Posted December 11, 2005 #12 Share Posted December 11, 2005 Looking at your map from the pier to Eden Rock, I am assuming that it is within walking distance.....am I correct? Yes, correct. The tenders will actually dock at the South Terminal. My label is incorrect. I'll have to fix that. And also, double checking to see if it "free" or do we have to get permission to snorkeling off the shore? Yes, snorkeling is free. Gear rental and lockers are what cost money. Now I'm confused- when you get off the tender, do you turn left or right to walk to Eden Rock? If you are facing away from the water, looking towards the island, turn LEFT and walk a couple of blocks.
sallyb Posted December 11, 2005 #13 Share Posted December 11, 2005 Thanks, just one more question, please. Do you know how much the locker rental is, and would it be included free if taking a course? Once I tender in, I'm staying the rest of the day, don't want to do it twice!

Yes, snorkeling is free. Gear rental and lockers are what cost money. If you are facing away from the water, looking towards the island, turn LEFT and walk a couple of blocks. Uh, Eden Rock area is about 100 yds to the RIGHT, if at the South Terminal. A little more if at the North and even more if at the new terminal. If the weather is bad and you tender in somewhere else, all bets are off. http://caymanislandsdiscounts.com/GTSnorkel_Map.jpg Shore Snorkeling Guide... http://caymanislandsdiscounts.com/OffshoreSnorkeling.htm

I can't believe I got the direction wrong. Zydeco is correct, or for a different way of putting it, he is right. At least I fixed the map. :) It now points to the correct tender dock.
