Are upgrades available on most sailings?

I have heard that the MSC cruises are seldom completely soldout. Has anyone had experiance with getting upgrades at embarkation? Either paid or Gratis. If paid would you mind sharing the cost?

 

We are sailing on the Opera on 2/18/2006. This is our 1st on MSC after over 25 on many other lines. We are hoping it is more like the old Oceanic.

if there are cabins available you can do paid upgrades........Inquire at reception when you get onboard.
