enough time for Ambergris visit and snorkeling?

Me and my family are taking our first cruise on Feb. 25th and will have one day in Belize. We will be in port from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. I really want to take a water taxi to Ambergris to see San Pedro, and would also like to go snorkeling (I think the place is called Hol Chan Marine Reserve or something like that) but am concerned that I will not have enough time to get there, snorkel, and hang out on the beach and get back in time for the 5:00 departure. Has anyone done this and are there any recommendations? We're also going to Costa Maya and will be there from 8:00 am - 10:00 pm, and wish we were in Belize until 10:00 pm!! Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I have found some independent tours/excursions that fly you from Belize City to Ambergris Caye. It's about a 20-minute flight. I'm seriously looking into this option. San Pedro looks and sounds awesome !!!
