bobnsandi Posted January 16, 2006 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Which side of the ship should we book in order to see the lava flow from our balcony? Thank you! Don't know about the Pride of America, but when we recently took the Pride of Aloha, the captain slowly turned the ship in a complete circle, so everyone could see the flow. The view was improved by their turning off all the unneeded outside lights on the ship, but that also made walking aound the decks a bit scary. We had small flashlights with us, and only used them to make sure we were walking safely. The rest of our lava experience was spent gawking at the spectacle. It is not a very long event, maybe an hour at the most. The captain wants to keep us out of the smoke plume that extends downwind from the flow. Your mileage may vary, etc, etc. Hope this helps. Onessa Posted January 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Just a quick cautionalry tale - on POAm they made an announcement earlier in the evening that we would be at the flow at 10:15. We were there at 9:45. They did not announce again. Since we were still all on "central time", I'm glad I had set the alarm! The alarm went off at about 9:40, I looked out the window and could already see it. I had plenty of time to wake my family, but otherwise, we might have just slept right through it! Middleager Posted January 16, 2006 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Keep in mind there's no guarantee you'll see the lava flow. Often you see it but sometimes you don't. It's good if you see it.
jame_g Posted January 16, 2006 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Just got back from PoAm today. (And boy am I tired and way off schedule!) The lava flow is seen from the Starboard side. The captain did turn the ship around a full 360 degrees so everyone was able to see it. Many people came on deck to view the lava. We were on the port side, so we went up on deck for a bit, then back down before the ship was turned. I have heard that on occasion the turn does not occur. The times they give for the lava flow and Napali coast were both off. You could see both earlier than they stated, but in our case we stayed around long enough that you could also view after the given time.
