Galveston Super 8 not a good choice!

We stayed in Galveston the night before our cruise on the Rhapsody of the Seas. We chose the Super 8 Motel, which turned out to be a mistake. The bathroom was nasty, with formica board pulling away from the wall around the tub/shower, and mold everywhere under the board. There is no such thing as a non-smoking room in this place - they reek of smoke and body odor. No ground floor rooms were available, even though there wasn't a car in the parking lot...a lot of walk-in customers apparently. We had to drag all of our cruise luggage up outside stairs, and of course there is no elevator. Go somewhere else.

We stayed at the Tremont Hotel in the historic part of Galveston. I booked the room well in advance (3 mo.) on Priceline. I got the room for $70. It was wonderful. This is a very well restored historic hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They practically fell over themselves to help us with our luggage, even offering to hang the luggage bags in the closet. There was beautiful piano music playing in the atrium when we arrived after a long day traveling. We could hear it softly playing in our room, which overlooked the atrium. The only problem we had was that the free shuttle to the cruise terminal was already full and we had to take a taxi. It ended up working out better for us in the long run. We picked the time we wanted to go and the yellow cab van cost only $5. It was worth it not to have to wait in line with everyone else.
