Back in February, I noticed they had reduced solo supplements on balcony rooms so I was able to switch the studio to a balcony for the price difference at the time (under $200). The agent originally thought it would cost a lot more, but after putting it in her computer was surprised to see the price matched what I saw on the website. The new room was a sail away rate, but the solo doesn't drink so the perk wasn't important. Incidentally, the same agent would not let me upgrade my room from a balcony to mini-suite for no cost because we already had a guarantee rate and the new room would also have been a guarantee rate. We would have needed to upgrade to a non-guarantee category for nearly $2000 more. Perhaps this is the same rule you ran into. Was your original studio a guarantee? Sorry I haven't replied sooner. My Studio room was not a guarantee so I'm not sure why they would not let me upgrade for a low cost. I just called back yesterday to try again and was told that they did not have a balcony to upgrade me to. I did, however, mention that I was trying to upgrade because the price of the Studio had gone down considerably since I booked it way back when. They concurred and gave me $170 onboard credit, which is approximately 25% of the price drop (consistent with what others have been given). I'm satisfied with that even though I would have loved to have a balcony at the same price I booked the Studio. I will know next time to keep a watch on price fluctuations prior to booking.
