What to wear, What to wear????

Formal and dress up nights are making my DH groan loudly. He can't think of anything worse than dressing up in a suit to eat or to dress up for theme nights (other than being pulled up on stage!).

So will a long sleeved shirt and tie do for formal nights?

And for theme nights I said we will wear a lei for island night, and that's it.

He asks if he can just go and eat his dinner and not get dressed up....party pooper, but each to his own. His philosophy is, he is on holiday and he wants to do and wear what he wants to do and wear, not be told...sounds harsh....I like a bit of direction especially if it leads to fun.:p

So on board during the day I presume it is casual dress, and then you change for dinner?

We are going on N609 20th March 2006, what will the weather be like? Tried looking it up on weather sites but thought it best to ask you guys.

One other question not regarding clothes (though that Fabulon Iron free stuff sounds like a goer). When you put money on your cruise card from your credit card is this considered a cash transaction, as interest on cash transactions are immediate, no 30 day interest free period? $$$$ Dan you should know this one....still working out your casino tip.

Thanks all

Hi Breathless,

I usually wear casual clothes during the day including comfortable shoes. I like to shower & change for dinner and except for formal nights mostly wear smart casual each night.

Formal nights I like to get dressed up and usually treat myself to a hair do on one of the nights (this cruise I won a shampoo, cut & blowdry in the Lotus Spa raffle so didn't have to pay for it!). There are a number of people who don't dress at all for dinner including formal nights. It is nice however to get formal portraits done for a fraction of the cost of what they are on land.

It is entirely up to the individual. In the past they would turn you away from the restaurant if you were not dressed appropriately, now the only "rules" appear to be shoes must be worn and swimwear cannot be worn at any time. I personally like the opportunity to wear my "good" clothes.

I usually take my "tropical" shirt & lei to wear on Island Night. I wasn't aware of the other theme nights on the Star so didn't take any other "dress up" items but as I am not into the Nightclub it wasn't a problem.

Another tip is to take Febreeze (which you can get in most supermarket laundry aisles) especially on the Sun where the deck near the casino is especially smoky. It removes odours from the clothes and is very handy. We use it each night when we get back to the cabin to spray our clothes and it stops the cabin & our other clothes from smelling like an ashtray.

Cheers,

Chaz:)

Please DO NOT panic. You will be fine honest.

A lot of people do not get dressed up for theme nights. The exception being island night. You will not feel out of place. As chaz said people usually get dressed up after dinner for the theme night, you can have a great time without dressing up. Who wants all those extra clothes anyway.

I would suggest a suit for hubby if he will wear one for formal night but dont go and buy one just for the cruise. Very few wore tuxes on our cruise but nearly everyone was nicely dressed. Younger guys just wore trendy shirts, no ties and still looked great.

Yes very casual dress during the day. Most wore swimmers sarong to breakfast and lunch in the lido and more smart casual at night.

The australian ships are much more casual than the american ones so if you have been reading the dress threads there, dont worry.I know it is hard, that was my biggest worry.

You will have a good time, but just a suggestion, please wear something more than just a lei on island night:) , please think about at least wearing a swimming costume or sarong, better still go with your first thought , you may be the life and soul of the party!!!:D :D :D

on our last cruise all transactions were combined onto one bill that was debitted as a credit purchase. I think it has changed since oct (when we sailed) but i think it still would be a credit charge not cash advance.

any more questions just ask.

As another example as to how casual the "Sun" is. On the day we went to mystery island , we missed lunch ,but a waiter told us about the afternoon tea. We had heard about it but never been, (there IS a limit to how much food someone can consume!!). So we went down in our swimmers, sarong, kids in board shorts, hair looking a mess, well we had been in the water for many hours. We really wanted to check it out and come back later, but no we were ushered in by waiters in white gloves, the whole works. We were made to feel very welcome even in our bedraggled state!!.Unfortunately we didnt manage to sample afternoon tea again but well worth going if you can force some more food into you!!

Breathless,

Thanks...

yes when you do a credit card transaction for your cruise card it is a purchase and will be entitled to any interest free period you have with your cc company.

As for the dress, dont sweat it. We only dressed up for formal night and island night. As did a lot of others. I think the other nights are more games nights and themes rather then dress regulations..

Just relax and have a great time.

Cheers,

Dan

All the transactions on your credit card on board will be processed as a purchases - your statement will show something like Carinval Australia - Pacific Sun, or something similar. All transactions will be in Australian dollars, and they'll probably already be showing up on your statements by the time you get back to Australia.

Also, you may not be aware, but the Duty Free and Souvenier Shop on board Pacific Sun accept direct credit card purchases, you don't have to use your cruise card (but you can if you want to). However if you purchase a painting at one of the Art Auctions, you have to use your Cruise Card.

Breathless, if you would like a definitive explanation on the credit card payments, i.e. are they cash advances (hence instant interest) or normal credit card purchases, why not email P&O directly?

information@pocruises.com.au

probably because they answer they get will bear little resemebalnce to what will actually happen on board????

Kasey, we did the same thing after being at Isle Pines. Thought we'd have a look, change and go back. The waiters ushered us in, made us feel very welcome and laid on the sandwiches, cakes etc. The only problem was they sat us with a group of old fuddy duddies:mad: who were quite shocked at our "casual attire". :o I felt embarrased forrrrrrrrr, say 30 seconds, then just ignored them (tried to start up conversation but they weren't very receptive). Any way that was our first and last time for the afternoon tea. You can only eat so much!!!!:D

Breathless my hubby just wore a nice short sleeved shirt and black pants on our first formal night and the second formal night our shower carked it so we could freshen up well at all, so he wore another short sleeve shirt and jeans and looked fine and I just wore cargos and t-shirt.

On our second cruise a hubby and wife on our table didn't dress up and felt a bit out of place (we told them not to worry, no big deal), so on the 2nd formal night they both came dressed up and loved it. So you never know!!

If hubby doesn't want to dress up, you still can. Relax and go with flow on how you're feeling on the night.
